Jimmy ‘Jim’ Dale Soetmelk

A memorial service for Jimmy “Jim” Dale Soetmelk will be held Friday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. at Atwood Family Chapel in Greybull. Jim, 62, died as a result of a one-car motor-vehicle accident south of Basin Jan. 15.
He was born March 6, 1949, in Logan, Iowa, the son of Carl George and Eleanor Inez Probasco Soetmelk. Jim grew up working on the family farm in Woodbine, Iowa, with his brother and parents. He received his education and graduated from high school in Iowa.
He met Diane K. Peterson when he was 12 years old. They were married Aug. 16, 1969, in Woodbine.
In 1976, the Soetmelks moved to Wyoming to be closer to the mountains. He continued to farm until deciding to further his education. He attended Montana State University in Billings and graduated with his bachelor’s degree in science and social work. At the time of his death, he was working for Worland Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center as the admissions and social service director.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping in the Big Horn Mountains with family and friends. They spent many years traveling to different states in their fifth-wheel camper.
Jim was a member of BPOE Lodge 1431 in Greybull and the Peace Lutheran Church of Basin.
He is survived by his wife Diane Soetmelk; daughter and son-in-law, Andrea and Mike Laird, and grandchildren Brianna and Brendon of Greybull; his son and daughter-in-law, David and Jill Soetmelk, and granddaughter Desiree Young, of Basin; brother and sister-in-law Lloyd and Rilla Soetmelk of Logan, Iowa; sister-in-law Judy Hamer of Sioux City, Iowa, and five nieces and nephews.
Memorials in Jim’s name may be sent to Big Horn Federal Savings Bank, Box 471, Greybull, WY 82426. The beneficiary will be decided at a later date.
