While serving in the United States Navy near the conclusion of World War II, Jim sensed that God was calling him to preach the gospel as a full-time minister.

Jim married his forever sweetheart and ministry partner Isabel Smith on March 26, 1949. Together they served as Baptist missionaries in the Mississippi River Delta area of Louisiana for 30 years.

They enjoyed 24 years of retirement in Jackson and Brookhaven, Miss., before moving to Basin in June 2009 to be near their daughter.

His parents, son Philip Coney of Chattanooga, Tenn. in 2006, two brothers, Bobby and Raymond, and his sister, Betty, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife Isabel of Basin, son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Debbie Coney of Baton Rouge, La., daughter and son-in-law Kent and Jan Dempsey of Basin, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
