Four points again separate Buffs, Rams

The Lady Rams from Big Horn have proven to be a four-point nemesis for the Lady Buffs in the early going this season. In the Coal Miner’s Classic in Wright in the season opener, Greybull fell to Big Horn 35-31, and in a rematch in Big Horn Dec. 19, the Buffs lost, by four points, 50-46.

“We had a pretty rough start,” said Buff Coach Jeff Hunt. “We came out flat and Big Horn took advantage of it.”

Down 11 points (28-17) at the halfway mark, Greybull came out fired up and “played outstanding defense” in the third quarter, outscored the Rams 22-10 and took a one-point lead.

It looked good for the Buffs until it turned into a free-throw shooting contest. “We just couldn’t hold on,” Hunt said. “We played great basketball in the second half and showed what we are capable of.”

Brett Stephens and Karlina McIntosh shared scoring honors with 15 points each, and led in steals with six and four respectively.

Coach Hunt emphasized that “Big Horn is a good team; they are 6-1 right now. I think the girls really saw what we can do.”

The Buffs get a short hiatus over Christmas but will be back on court Dec. 29, preparing for a trip down south for the Big Piney Tournament Jan. 2-3.
