Lady Buffs win back-to-back thrillers

If you’re a fan of the Lady Buffs, the big gym was the place for you to be last week when the Buffs pulled off a double-overtime, 59-51 victory over the Burlington Huskies Tuesday, then held off the Tongue River Eagles 42-41 Friday.

The Buffs would have liked to make it a three-game home sweep, but those hopes were dashed by their old nemesis, Big Horn, as the Lady Rams took control early and beat the Buffs 56-37 Saturday afternoon.

Tuesday’s game was nip-and-tuck from the get-go. Although the Buffs led at the first three quarter stops, the largest margin was three points, and at the end of regulation it was tied at 40.

Karlina McIntosh and Madi Edeler carried the Buffs in the first OT; Brett Stephens came up big in the second overtime. Her two long-range bombs fired up the Buffs as Greybull outscored Burlington 13-5 in the final four-minutes for the 59-51 win.

“It wasn’t our best game,” said Coach Jeff Hunt. “We struggled taking care of the ball (43 turnovers), but we were aggressive on defense and just did whatever it took to stay in the game.

“Brett (Stephens) and Karlina (McIntosh) hit a couple of big shots down the stretch to spark our offense and get us the lead. It was a stressful game for everyone but the girls fought hard and finished strong.”

Hunt also praised the play of several of his younger players, including Ky Sorensen, who came off the bench and grabbed eight rebounds, and Jordan Flitner, who played a good defensive game with five steals.

Greybull played excellent defense against Tongue River, and that was the key to the 42-41 win. “Tongue River had the lead just once in the game; we stuck to our game plan and played excellent defense. Our defense made their guards really struggle; they had a tough time getting the ball into their post players, and they (the post players) are the key to the Eagle offense.”

McIntosh scored a game-high 11 points to lead the offense and Florina Villegas had six boards to lead the defense.

Big Horn continued its hex-hold over the Buffs. “They have jumped on us early in every game we’ve played this year,” Hunt said.

The Lady Rams stormed to an early 17-2 lead, but give Greybull credit. The Buffs fought back and pulled within four points (25-21) by the halfway mark. Those four points disappeared in the third quarter when the Rams outscored Greybull 14-6.

“Big Horn shot very well against us and we didn’t shoot well at all. We had a difficult time getting anything going on offense.”

McIntosh was the only Lady Buff in double digits with 13 points. Edeler grabbed seven rebounds, Julianne Carlson was credited with six and Villegas had five.

Greybull opens conference play Friday in the Buff Gym at 5:30 p.m. against the Cory Sova-coached Thermopolis Bobcats. The Bobcats are physical and use their size well, Hunt said, adding, “Cory knows how to get teams to play hard.”

Saturday they go to Cowley for a 2:30 conference game with Rocky Mountain.

“Rocky matches up well with us. They have several girls back from last year and have been playing some close games. We haven’t played well in that gym and are hoping to change that.”
