Lady Buffs drop first 2 conference games

It was not a good weekend for the Greybull Lady Buffs; definitely not the way it was scripted by Coach Jeff Hunt, and definitely not what fans expected to see coming off a recent double-overtime win over Burlington and a one-point victory over Tongue River.

The Lady Buffs lost in consecutive conference games, at home Friday against Thermopolis, 54-31, and then to the Rocky Mountain Grizzlies, 42-32, in Cowley Saturday.

The Lady Buffs came out sluggish in the conference opener and didn’t get a wake up call until the second quarter. By that time they were down 16-0 and could never narrow that gap.

Greybull shot just 25 percent from the field. Karlina McIntosh scored 19 of the Buffs’ points; the senior connected on 5 of 13 from the field (including four from beyond the arc) and 5 of 8 from the line.

“We just couldn’t catch up,” Hunt said.

The scoring drought continued into Saturday; the Buffs shot poorly, 27 percent, and just 33 percent from the charity stripe in the 10-point loss.

“We fouled too much against Rocky and gave up too many free throws,” Hunt said. “Rocky shot well from the floor and made shots when they needed to.”

Greybull hopes to even its conference record (at 2-2) this weekend. The Buffs take on the Lady Blue in Shoshoni Friday at 5:30 p.m. and play the Lady Rebels in Basin at 3 p.m. Saturday.

“The girls are ready,” Hunt said. “Hopefully we’ll get our first two conference wins.”

The Shoshoni versus Greybull match-up should be a good one; Riverside has been struggling and the young, inexperienced team is still looking for a victory. The Buffs should have little trouble with the Rebels, but it is a rivalry game and anything can happen.

If the Buffs get the lid off the basket, play good defense and get the offense clicking, they could well emerge with a 2-2 conference mark.
