Buffs place second at Riverside Invite

The Greybull Buffs took a breather from their battles against big-school competition last week, attending smaller meets in Cowley and Basin where only a few teams were in attendance and top-eight finishes were easier to secure.

Coach Jeff Sukut called it a good week for his team. No one had a better one than Chris Ogg. The senior was the team’s only new automatic qualifier for state, bettering the 2A standard in the 100 meters April 21 in Cowley. He ran an 11.4, good for second behind Cade Bischoff of 3A Lovell. Ogg also won the 300 hurdles, finishing in 42.62.

“I’m really proud of Chris,” said Sukut. “He missed going to state by about a tenth of a second as a freshmen … and because of injuries, it’s been three years since he’s been on the track. He’s finally gotten his speed back and is earning points for us each week.”

Greybull finished third in the combined boys and girls standings at the Rocky Mountain Twilight, which was pushed back a week from April 14 to April 21 due to inclement weather. Lovell won it with 372 points, followed by Rocky Mountain with 201 and Greybull with 155. Burlington, with 155, and Riverside, with 137, rounded out the field.

The Riverside Invitational was an eight-team affair. The Buffs fared better in the boys, finishing just a single point out of first place. Riverside won it with 66, followed by the Buffs with 65. Lovell and Meeteetse tied for third with 43 points. The Greybull girls took eighth with 12 points.

Sukut said a number of his girls had good days in Basin.

Coming off injuries, Hannah Good placed in both the shot put and the discus.

Sydney Eckman was third in the 800 meters, running a 2:38.18. She continues to post times that put her among the top five runners in 2A.

Karla Corral has been showing improvement every week. She was fourth in Basin, finishing in 1:14.89.

Serenity Kinswoman “keeps improving in the mile and the 800,” according to Sukut.

Meanwhile, Calder Forcella and Ryan Sylvester continue to set the pace for the boys.

Forcella won three of the four throwing competitions. He won the discus twice — his 145-4 heave in Cowley was a personal best in a meet — and the shot put in Basin. He was second in the event at Cowley.

Sylvester’s forte is the long jump. He won it in Basin and took third in Cowley.

Sukut also said Wyatt Nielson and Cesar Sosa are “coming on” in the 110 hurdles, Zack Zeller is improving in the triple jump and that his group of sophomores are gaining valuable experience that should benefit them in the years to come.

The Buffs will be in Meeteetse Friday for a meet that starts at 1 p.m.

Barring a late change, Forcella and Sylvester are scheduled to compete at the Wyoming Track Classic in Casper. The two-day meet, formerly known as the Meet of Champions, brings together all of the top track and field performers from all of the state’s classifications.

After this week, the Buffs have just one more meet — the Bobcat Invitational on Friday, May 8 in Thermopolis — before the regional competition in Lander, which is set for May 15-16.

“We want to be peaking at regionals,” said Sukut. “So we’ll be amping our training up a bit this week before we start tapering down. We continue to see improvement though.”
