Buffs gather for first time Monday

If you’re an athlete at Greybull High School, summer will come to an end a few days earlier for you than it does for the rest of the student body, who get to wait until the first day of classes on Thursday, Aug. 20.

The Buffs who are going out for the fall sports of football and volleyball will crank it up for the first time on Monday, Aug. 17, which is opening day for all of the small schools around the state of Wyoming.

Coaches Sara Schlattmann and Marty Wrage both intend to get early starts.

The Lady Buff netters will have three days of two-a-day practices, with morning sessions on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 6 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. and afternoon sessions from 4 to 6 p.m. each of those days. On Thursday and Friday, the girls will practice one time only, from 4 to 6:15 p.m.

Schlattmann is also planning a morning practice from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. followed by a team builder from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 22. A mandatory parent meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24.

The Lady Buffs open the season Aug. 28-29 at the North Big Horn Invitational in Lovell and Cowley.

Saying first things first, Wrage emphasized that students-athletes must have their physicals done before they will be allowed to practice. Once they have those in hand, they will be able to start the season.

Like Schlattmann, Wrage will call in the Buffs at 6 a.m. on Monday for helmet checkouts.

The Buffs will practice from 6:30 to 7:40 a.m. and from 3:45 to 6 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, from 3:45 to 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday as they gear up for a triangular on their home field on Friday, Aug. 28, which is Week 0 on the schedule.

The Buffs will open the season with a home date against Riverside at 7 p.m. on Sept. 4.
