Donald L. Welton

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned for long-time Basin resident Donald L. Welton. Don, 91, died Aug. 9 at the Worland Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

Don was born Dec. 4, 1923, in Sheridan, the son of Lowell and Hazel Willey Welton. He grew up and received his education in Sheridan and graduated from Sheridan High School.

He enlisted in the United States Navy in November 1943 and served during World War II on the USS Oxford. He achieved the rank of Radioman Third Class and was honorably discharged on April 17, 1946.

Don married Shirley Claudine Hamlin on July 18, 1947, in Hardin, Mont.; she died on Jan. 7, 1976.

He married Dorothy Alice Smith in Tahoe, Calif., on Sept. 17, 1979.

Don worked for Burlington Northern Railroad and retired as stationmaster at Basin.

He enjoyed building and riding motorcycles and working on bicycles. He also loved to hunt and fish.

Don was a member of Masons Big Horn Mountain Lodge 43 in Sheridan, BPOE Lodge 1431 in Greybull and a past member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 3086 in Basin.

His parents, Lowell and Hazel Welton, and his first wife, Shirley Welton, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Welton of Basin; two daughters, Linda Wood of Stevensville, Mont., and Mary Ann Davis of Basin; one son, Dennis Moore of Napa, Calif.; seven grandchildren and nine-great-grandchildren.
