Lady Buffs win home opener

If you a Greybull volleyball fan, Saturday was a good day to be in the Buff Gym. All three Buff teams won their matches against the Burlington Huskies, starting with the JV 2 and culminating in the varsity Buffs outlasting their 1A opponents in three close, hotly contested sets, 26-24, 25-23, 25-21.

Coach Sara Schlattmann “was certainly excited that we won the match, but as I told the girls, we all felt like we could have played better.”

The Buffs fell behind in both of the first two sets and “had to claw our way back. We fell behind early and trailed in game one, 9-14, before mounting a comeback; in game two, same thing. We found ourselves down early 2-8 and then had to rally late in the game.”

Greybull started out a lot stronger in the third set. “Our serving really took off and we established a good lead; then we allowed Burlington back in the game.”

Schlattmann said she was trying a few different lineups and “that tripped us up a bit, but really I think we didn’t come with enough focus. I was very excited that we did come back. We have talked about the need to finish games, and I was proud that our girls did not give up.”

As a team, the Buffs served 88 percent, close to Schlattmann’s goal of 90 percent. Ky Sorensen, Aftin DeRosa and Savannah Kober didn’t miss a serve; Dasha Kelso and Bailee Stephens combined for six aces.

Madi Edeler drew praise from Schlattmann “for a great performance in the front row. She had 10 kills and five stuff blocks.”

Kelso had four kills, Jessica Dowling and Savannah Kober had three kills apiece and Jordan Flitner and Sorensen each had two kills. Julianne Carlson and Britney Fink had one kill apiece.

“We are learning that we have to do a better job of putting the ball away on the first attempt. We know that to win games we have to be swinging at balls. We must have better court awareness from everyone,” Schlattmann said.

They have been working on those aspects of the game in preparation for their conference opener today (Thursday, Sept. 10) against Rocky Mountain and Friday and Saturday at the Big Horn Invitational.
