Graveside services for Ernest J. Matz of Greybull will be held Saturday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. at the Donald J. Ruhl Memorial Cemetery. Ernest, 89, died Sept. 10.
He was born March 18, 1926, in Oakland, Neb., the youngest child of Peter and Amelia Moseman Matz. He grew up on a farm with his siblings, Elmer, Leona, Marcella, Edmund and Mary.
He served in the military during World War II and in 1945, was slated to be part of the invasion force when the Japanese surrendered. After his discharge he moved to North Dakota where he married Kathryn Bishop in 1951. The couple relocated to Omaha, Neb. and had a daughter, Christine, and a son, Michael.
In 1976, he married Barbara Rendel and in 1977, they relocated to Greybull with Barbara’s daughters, Dawn, Lori and Robin.
Ernest loved farming, attending auctions and drinking coffee with his friends.
His wife Barbara preceded him in death in 1990, and his companion Julie Ritz in 2007.
Ernest is survived by his children, Christine and Michael, his stepchildren, Dawn, Lori and Robin, and four grandchildren.
