Lady Buffs 2-2 at Herder Classic

If the Herder Classic had been a one-day tournament the Greybull Lady Buffs would have been sitting pretty as they outscored both Lusk, 35-33, and host Glenrock, 34-31, on Saturday.

Unfortunately the tournament started Friday when the Buffs lost straight decisions to Wright, 36-32, and Big Horn, 59-32.

Coach Jeff Hunt said it was a good tournament. “We got some much-needed experience and saw some things we need to work on.”

Greybull played well against Wright in the opener but “it came down to a couple of missed opportunities. They have a pretty good guard; I felt we did a lot of good things.”

Madi Edeler had a double-double, with 12 points and 11 rebounds. She was the only Buff in double digits. Florina Villegas had eight counters and seven boards.

Big Horn stuck the Buffs 59-32 in what was the second game for Greybull, the first game for the Lady Rams. “Big Horn is tough and very athletic,” Hunt said. “We played tired and they took advantage of that by running the floor on us. Big Horn also shot very well in the first half.”

The Buffs shot just 35 percent from the line. “We missed a lot of free throws early and it cost us,” according to Hunt. From the field, “we shot okay, but didn’t get as many shots as we would have liked.”

Nine players scored but none in double digits. Kendall Wright had seven and Ky Sorensen six.

The break-through over Lusk was a game where a total of 63 fouls were called, so it was a long one. Four starters sat the bench through the majority of the second half. “This was a great game for our youngsters to step up. Kendall Wright and Tatem Edeler played some great minutes for us. We struggled with finishing, but managed to hold them off.”

Madi Edeler had another double-double with 11 points and 12 boards. Sorensen had nine points and 10 rebounds.

“Our girls played hard on defense and out-rebounded them; that was the difference in the game.”

The Buffs got no down time after the Lusk game; they were right back on court to play Glenrock in the closer. ”Glenrock played us tough but we held on and finished when we needed to,” Hunt said.

  1. Edeler and Villegas had seven points apiece; Edeler added 12 boards to lead the defense.

Greybull goes to Lusk this weekend for the Tiger Jamboree. The Buffs open Friday against the host Lady Tigers at 4 p.m. then get a four hour break before challenging Burns at 8:30.
