Lady Buffs go 1-2 at Lusk tourney

Greybull opened the Tiger Jamboree tournament with a bang Friday, beating the host Lady Tigers, 55-39.

“This was our second meeting this year and we talked all week about what we needed to do to shut them down; the girls really bought into it,” said Coach Jeff Hunt.

The Buffs pressed the Tigers and “completely shut them down in the second half.”

A nifty 15 of 18 from the charity stripe went a long way to ensure the win. Hunt said it was “the best we’ve shot since I’ve been coaching.”

Madi Edeler and Ky Sorensen led the offense with 14 and 10 points, respectively.

It was a low-scoring, 27-26 loss to Burns. The score could have gone either way but Burns outscored the Buffs 10-8 in the fourth quarter and that was the difference.

Hunt said Burns is a tough team. “It was a defensive game; both teams struggled to score. It went down to the wire. We had a couple of chances to take the lead but just couldn’t finish.”

No one hit double digits; Sorenson scored nine points and Florina Villegas had seven, to go with four rebounds.

The eight-point loss to Pine Bluffs, ranked fourth in 2A, was actually closer than the 46-38 score indicates. Hunt said, “It came down to a few missed shots. Pine Bluffs is a very good team and we played rally well as a team in this game. We kept our composure and controlled the tempo.”

Sorensen and Madi Edeler hit double-digits, both scoring 10 points. Edeler grabbed eight boards and Villegas had seven.

The Buffs have two weeks to hone their skills over the holiday break. They will hit the court again on Tuesday, Jan. 5, as they travel to take on Burlington in games at 4 and 5:30 p.m.

Greybull doesn’t open conference play until Jan. 22 when they play the Lady Bobcats in Thermopolis. Their first home game is Jan. 23 when Rocky Mountain come into the friendly confines of the Buff Gym for games at 1 and 2:30 p.m.
