Longtime area resident Cecil Yates, age 78, passed away in Billings, Mont., on Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, due to surgery complications.
Cecil was born in Nebraska but moved to the Greybull/Burlington area when she was 3. She attended school in Greybull and graduated from Burlington High School in 1955. She married Darwin Yates in 1957 and was going on 59 years. They were blessed with four daughters: Billie Marie Roberts (Greg), Sherrie Mulley, Darla Thorne, and Debie Weidenhoft. Cecil also claimed very special friends, Linda Jolley and Rita DeSilva, as daughters.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Martha and William Lewis and her brother, Reuben. Cecil’s surviving brothers are: Howard Lewis of Greybull, Johnny Lewis of Cody, and Billy Lewis of Colorado.
Her joys in life were Queen of the Ride of Champions in 1957. She also had bragging rights to winning a baking contest in Montana and Wyoming from the Billings Gazette with her Mexican Fruit Cake. She enjoyed watching her four daughters playing on the same fast-pitch softball team and going to the National Finals sixteen years in a row.
Her church first, family, horses, and sporting events kept her very occupied until her recent illness. Cecil has 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Per Cecil’s request, no services are being held with private family services at a later date.
