‘Relentless’ D sparks Lady Buffs

Don’t blame the Lady Buffs, or the Lady Blue of Shoshoni, for “shooting the lights out” in a conference games played in the Buff Gym Saturday.

Blame Mother Nature for the two power outages that turned a normal 90-minutes game into one that extended to three-plus hours. When the lights finally came on, and stayed on, the Buffs prevailed to beat Shoshoni, 31-16, tightened their hold on the top spot in the conference and kept their unbeaten conference record alive.

“It was a weird game with the power going out twice,” said Coach Jeff Hunt. “It made for a difficult first half; we really came out flat.”

At the end of the first quarter the Buffs were up 8-6; that was it as far as offense for the Buffs in the first half. The Lady Blue took the 11-8 lead.

That was it for Shoshoni; the Lady Blue scored just five points the rest of the way, and those were scored in the final eight minutes of the game.

“We made some simple adjustments at the half and the girls came out fired up.”

Coach Hunt described his team’s defense as “relentless” in the second half. “Shoshoni struggled to get the ball inside the three-point line. We trapped them very well and made it difficult for them to set up any kind of offense. Our girls really stepped up in the second half.”

Sophomore Ky Sorensen had a hot hand in the third quarter, got some quick steals, and good passes from her teammates, and powered her team to the 22-11 lead.

With four starters in foul trouble Coach Hunt turned to his bench for help, and the reserves stepped it up a notch. “They played excellent defense.”

Hunt pointed out that for the second week a row, the Buffs held an opponent to single-digit scoring in the second half.

The regular season winds down this week; Thursday (tonight) the Buffs are in Rocky Mountain for games at 4-5:30 p.m.

Greybull hosts Riverside Friday at 4-5:30 p.m. It will be Senior Night; Madi Kraft, Savannah Kober, Sydney Eckman, Florina Villegas and Madi Edeler will be recognized and honored for their contributions to the team.

Looking ahead to the Class 2A West Regional in Riverton Feb. 25-27, the Buffs won’t have to worry about being involved in a pigtail game. With a firm grip on the top seed from the Northwest, all they have to think about is which team from the South they’ll face in the first round.
