Dorothy Smith (Moore) Welton, 93, of Basin died Tuesday, March 8 at South Big Horn County Critical Access Hospital between Basin and Greybull.
Dorothy was born May 18, 1922, in Alliance, Neb., to George Arthur and Jessie Edna (Swaim) Smith. She spent her childhood in the Palmer, Neb., area, graduating from high school in May 1939. Following graduation, she moved to Broken Bow, Neb., and later to North Platte, Neb., where she worked as a CNA for several years.
Dorothy married Darrel Dean Moore on Dec. 24, 1941, in Boulder, Colo. While her husband was in the military, she moved back to Palmer, Neb. After the discharge of her husband, they relocated to the Black Hills of South Dakota, living in Lead. There she was employed by the Seaton Publishing Company from 1950 – 1974. While in Lead, she and her husband took up flying and both received their pilot’s license. Following the death of her husband from a plane crash, Dorothy transferred to Sheridan, Wyo., with the Seaton Publishing Company.
She married Donald Lowell Welton on Sept. 17, 1978, in Lake Tahoe, Calif. Following their retirements, they lived in Basin and spent the winters in Arizona.
She was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Basin.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents and her husband Donald Welton.
She is survived by her son, Dennis (Bonnie) Moore of Napa, Calif.; a daughter, Mary Ann (Bob) Davis of Centralia, Wash.; five grandchildren, Eric (Bibi) Moore and David (Brenda) Moore, and Donald Davis, Ron Davis, and Tya Kraus, all of Washington; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and three brothers, Wayne Freeland of Lead, S.D., Ernest Freeland of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Donald Freeland of Hampton, Neb.
Per Dorothy’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no services are planned.
