Villegas, relay team qualify for state

Greybull High School saw its first athletes qualify for the state track meet in competition last weekend in Burlington and Powell.

Senior Florina Villegas, who didn’t go out for track last season, needed just three meets to better the state-qualifying standard in the shot put. Her 33-foot, 4-inch heave in Burlington was good enough to win the event.

It was also Greybull’s only individual win at the Burlington Invitational, a small meet consisting primarily of 1A and 2A teams. Lovell, the only 3A team in the field, won it with 163 points, followed by the Buffs with 134.

The story at the Powell Roundtable on Saturday was the state qualifying performance of the 400-meter relay team. Sydney Eckman, Sydney Tschiffely, Brea Terry and Bailee Foster ran a 54.86, narrowly slipping under the 54.88 qualifying standard and finishing behind only Lovell and Rocky Mountain.

“It was a big meet — there were a lot of powerhouse 3A teams like Powell, a three-time state champ, Cody, Riverton, Lovell — so obviously, the competition was fast and furious,” said Coach Jeff Sukut.

The Buffs placed eighth in the girls division with 27.5 points.

“The Burlington meet was a little smaller and our girls did really well out there,” he said.

The 3,200 meter relay team, which as the only entry in the race had the track to itself, took first place in Burlington, finishing in 11:20.94. While each runner would have to shave two to three seconds off their time for the foursome to make a run at the qualifying mark, Sukut said he was encouraged by their effort.

“Looking around the state in 2A, there will probably only be a few teams who are able to put together a team that will AQ,” he said. “Usually those relay teams go to state by placement (at the regional meet).

Eckman, Terry, McKenzie Mazur and Tatem Edeler ran the race in Burlington.

The highlights on the boys’ side were few and far between, as the Buffs placed fifth in Burlington and ninth in Powell. Sukut said Cesar Sosa provided one of them, posting a time of 46.74 in the 300-meter hurdles in Powell. “He’s improving,” said Sukut. “If he can bring that down a second or two, it should be enough to earn him a place at regionals.”

Overall, Sukut said he and assistant coach Nolan Tracy continue to evaluate their athletes, with the ultimate goal being to get them entered in the events in which they would have the most success.

The Buffs will compete a meet in Basin on Friday. Start time is 9 a.m.
