Dr. Eugene A. Doerr of Boise, Idaho and formerly of Basin, Wyo., passed away on Saturday, April 23, 2016 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Eugene was born in Lovell, Wyo., on August 10, 1939 to Alfred and Molly Doerr. He grew up on the family farm east of Lovell. He graduated from Lovell High School in 1958. Eugene received athletic and scholastic scholarships to attend Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Mont., playing football and basketball for the Rocky Mountain Bears. On September 11, 2011, Eugene was inducted into the Rocky Mountain College Athletic Hall of Fame.
Eugene married Vicki Hartman from Basin, Wyo., on September 1, 1962. They moved to Chicago where Eugene attended Northwestern Dental School, graduating in 1965. Eugene then entered the U.S. Army, serving as a Captain in the Army Dental Corps at Fort Sill, Okla., during the Vietnam War. In 1967, Eugene moved his family to Basin, Wyo., where he practiced dentistry for 33 years. While in Basin, Eugene served as the staff dentist for the Wyoming Retirement Center, Bonnie Bluejacket Memorial Nursing Home, and South Big Horn County Hospital. Eugene and his wife raised three sons in Basin. He also served on the School Board for 20 years, the Northwest District Board of Cooperative Services for 12 years, and the Basin Recreation District Board of Directors for 12 years.
Eugene served on the Board of Directors of the Wyoming State Dental Association, serving 8 years as President. He also served as President, Vice President, and Secretary for the Northwest District Dental Society and spent 15 years on the Wyoming State Board of Dental Examiners (6 years as President). He spent 15 years with the Central Regional Dental Testing Service as an Examiner (6 years on the Steering Committee). He also served on the Western Regional Examining Board from 1999 – 2002. Wyoming Governor Ed Herschler appointed Eugene to serve on the Wyoming Health Systems Agency. For all of his achievements, Eugene was inducted into the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the International College of Dentists.
In 2001, Eugene and Vicki moved to Boise, Idaho, where Eugene worked locum tenens dentistry for several years in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho and worked 6 years at Willamette Dental before retiring in 2013. Eugene and his wife traveled the far corners of the world before Vicki became ill. Eugene devoted the last two years of his life to loving and caring for Vicki (his best friend and the love of his life), whom he lost to cancer in January of this year.
Eugene was also preceded in death by his brother, Don in 1999. He is survived by three sons: Timothy (Meredith) in Boise, Idaho; Anthony (Heather) in Gulf Breeze, Fla.; and Todd (Shideh) in Scottsdale, Ariz., as well as 12 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother, Rollie Doerr in Cody, Wyo., and his sister, Helen Regnier in Lovell, Wyo.
A graveside service and burial will be held at Mount View Cemetery in Basin, Wyo., on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at 10:00 a.m.
