A graveside service for Homer Small was held June 24 at Mountain View Cemetery in Riverton with Masonic rites and military honors. Homer, 73, died June 16 at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper.
He was born Nov. 5, 1942, in Worland, the son of Amos Bowen and Sadye Isabel Herriott Small. He grew up and received his education in Greybull and graduated from Greybull High School in 1961.
He married Myrna Lee Montgomery in Las Vegas on June 25, 1970.
Homer served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.
Homer earned his associate’s degree in criminal justice from Central Wyoming College in Riverton; he graduated from the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va., in 1988.
He began his 25-year career as a Wyoming Highway Patrolman working as a patrolman in Lander; became the patrol sergeant in Casper for two years and then moved to Rock Springs as a lieutenant.
Homer was also a pilot for the WHP in the 1970s, when airplanes were used to enforce speed limits.
After his retirement from the State of Wyoming, he worked for the US Postal Service for eight years.
He was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Lander Masonic Lodge AF/AM No. 2; and a member of the Shrine Club.
Homer enjoyed all sports, carpentry, mechanics, fishing and hunting.
His parents, Amos and Sadye Small, sister Stella Small Terry, and his nephew, Nicky Squires, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Myrna Lee Small; son Matthew Lee Small of Half Moon Bay, Calif.; two daughters, Jenny Lund of San Manuel, Ariz. and Kristina Small of Valparaiso, Fla; brother and sister-in-law, Amos Bowen and Judy Small of Cottonwood, Ariz; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Pauline Squires and Paul and Kathleen Small Hermann and five grandsons.
