Regional meet nears for GHS track team

Greybull High School thinclads ventured off the beaten path last week, where no Bobcats or Grizzlies, Bulldogs or Rebels would go, for their second-to-last track meet before the regional competition in Lander.

The Buffs were the only team from this side of the mountain in attendance at Friday’s Tongue River Invitational in Dayton, where they were joined by the hosts as well as two other teams from Sheridan County, Big Horn and Normative Services.

Coach Jeff Sukut said it was more than worth the drive, citing TR’s “great facilities” and using the word “gorgeous” to describe both the weather and the setting, right at the base of the Big Horns.

“It was kind of like the Wyoming Indian meet earlier in the season, although there were quite a few more kids at that one,” said Sukut. “This one was good for a couple of reasons. One, it gave the kids a chance to compete against other people for a change, and two, for those who have had a difficult time placing at the big meets, it gave them a chance to earn some recognition.”

Awards were given to the top six placers, but the top eight were used to determine team scores. Tongue River won both divisions, collecting 168.5 points in the girls and 170 in the boys. The Greybull girls placed second with 142 points, thanks largely to multiple wins by Brooke Flock and McKenzie Mazur. The Greybull boys took third, accumulating 103 team points.

Sukut said a number of female athletes set personal records, including:

  • Kaylyn Burns, Sydney Tshiffely, Angel Moon and Brittany Ogg, all in the 100 meters;
  • Mazur and Burns, both in the 200; for Mazur, it was her first time running the event.
  • Monique Velasquez, in the 400;
  • Brooke Flock, in the 1,600;
  • Velasquez and Moon, in the long jump
  • Velasquez in the triple jump;
  • Heidi Araiza and Eden Hanson, in the shot put;
  • Hanson, in the discus.

PRs on the boys side included:

  • Zack Keisel and Dale McBride, in the 100
  • Elian Davila and Felipe Gaytan, in the 200
  • Branden Welsh, in the 400;
  • Gaven McColloch, in the 3,200;
  • 400-meter relay team of Keisel, James Robertson, Caleb Bottom and Gaytan;
  • 1,600-meter medley relay team of Keisel, Robertson, Bottom and McColloch;
  • Bottom, in the long jump; he bettered his previous best by more than a foot.
  • Davila did the same, in the triple jump.

Homestretch

The Buffs will be entered in Friday afternoon’s Bobcat Invitational in Thermopolis. Running and field events start at 1 p.m.

To this point, Mazur is the only GHS athlete who has qualified for state. The girls’ 400-meter relay team continues to aim for the qualifying standard, as Sukut said their time in Dayton “was almost identical to the one they had going in.”

A bad handoff cost them, he said, adding, “That’s such a precision race, all it takes is a little botch on a handoff, and that’s what we had. A girl who was waiting for the baton took off a little too fast. If we can eliminate that sort of thing, it’ll cut a second, a second and a half, right there.”

Overall, though, Sukut said “We’re definitely making strides as a team,” adding that he hopes it continues in Thermopolis. With a number of teams entered from the Southwest, it’ll have the look and feel of a regional, he said.
