Buffs open with key conference games against Lovell
by nathan oster
The first weekend of the new year brings a couple of important games for the Greybull Buffs, who are set to host the Lovell Bulldogs Friday night before hitting the road for rematches with Burlington on Saturday.
The Lady Buffs capped the pre-holiday portion of their schedule with a nine-point win over the Lady Huskies and sit at 5-5 overall, 0-1 in the Class 2A Northwest Conference entering play this weekend.
The Lovell game will give the girls an indication of where they stand heading into the conference season. The Lady Bulldogs, who are the reigning 2A champions, sit at 3-3, but the competition they faced in December was top-notch. Their only losses have been to 3A teams, in Douglas, Lander and Powell.
The girls games will be at 4 p.m. (junior varsity) and 5:30 p.m. (varsity).
Heading into the new year, Thermopolis sits atop the conference heap with a 9-1 overall and 1-0 conference records. Greybull is at the bottom, at 5-5, 0-1. In between are Lovell, at 3-3, Rocky Mountain, at 3-4, and Riverside, at 2-4.
Saturday the Lady Buffs will try to complete the sweep of their home-and-home series with the Lady Huskies. Game times are 4 and 5:30 p.m.
The Buffs will come out of the break with games against the No. 1 ranked team in 2A, Lovell, followed on Saturday by their rematch with Burlington, which headed into the holidays as the No. 1 ranked team in 1A.
To date, it’s been a roller coaster ride of a season for the Buffs. They opened the season with four straight wins, but have since dropped six straight, including a double overtime thriller to Thermopolis before Christmas.
With that setback, the Buffs find themselves at 0-1 and at the bottom of the conference standings heading into 2013. They will get a chance to even their mark when Lovell comes to town on Friday. The junior varsity game tips at 4 p.m., the varsity contest at 7 p.m.
Lovell is 5-1. The only blemish on their record is a five-point loss to 3A Lander.
As the new year begins, Thermopolis sits at 6-4, Lovell 5-1, Rocky Mountain 4-3 and Riverside 0-6.
On Saturday the Buffs are in Burlington for games at 4 and 7 p.m. The Huskies won the first matchup and will be looking for the sweep of the season series.
For a young team, the Greybull-Riverside wrestlers made a lot of gains in December, wrestling well at tournaments in Powell, Wright and Forsyth, Mont.
Now, however, the focus shifts to foes a little closer to home.
The wrestlers will square off with Thermopolis in a 7 p.m. dual today (Thursday, Jan. 3) in Thermopolis.
On Friday, the Buffs will be in Cowley, site of this year’s Big Horn County Dual Championships. Wrestling starts at 2 p.m. Greybull-Riverside will square off with Lovell and Rocky Mountain.
