Herbert ‘Herb’ Blaine Highland

The funeral service for Herbert “Herb” Blaine Highland of Basin will be held today (Thursday, Jan. 5) at 2 p.m. at the Atwood Family Chapel in Greybull. Herb, 83, died Dec. 30, 2011, at the Wyoming Retirement Center in Basin.
A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Atwood Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in the Mount View Cemetery in Basin.
Herb was born March 9, 1928 in Basin, to Orville J. and Myrtle Verna (Smith) Highland. Herb was raised on a ranch in the town of Shell, which was settled by his great-grandfather, Jordan L. Smith. Herb started his elementary school years at Shell and graduated from Greybull High School. After Herb’s father passed away, he made the decision to sell the ranch and move to Basin.
Herb met and married Martha Jane Blank in June 5, 1953, at the First Baptist Church in Basin.
Herb worked for the Wyoming Gas Company for 25 years before retiring. He then went to work for the Wyoming Department of Transportation for 12 years working on the road crew and driving the snowplow before retiring.
Herb enjoyed the outdoors and loved to go camping with his family, hunting, and fishing. Herb loved to walk every day and could be seen walking all over town.
Herb was a member of the Basin Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #3086, was active at the Greybull senior citizens center, and attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Worland.
Herb is preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Rebecca and Kay; and one great-grandchild.
Herb is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Martha Highland of Basin; three daughters, Karen Brink and husband Rocky of Thermopolis, Cindy Foster and husband George of Basin, and Sara Brow of Falmouth, Mass.; his sister, Verna Denniston of Otto; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Memorials will be received in Herb’s name at Security State Bank, P.O. Box 531, Basin, WY 82410. Proceeds will go to the South Big Horn Senior Center in Greybull.
