Long-time board member Bill Greer of Hyattville spent a good part of the past three decades working to make the Big Horn County Fair a good experience — and he had a whole lot of fun doing it.
He resigned last month after 28 years of service and said the best part of being part of the fair for that length of time is the kids and the quality of the fair improving.
“I’ve seen two generations coming through,” he said. “A lot of the parents showed and now the kids are showing.”
Greer said duties on the family ranch and his role as vice president of the Guardians of the Range left him doubtful of the time he would be able to spend on fair issues.
“I figure I better put more of my time where my livelihood is,” he said. “We have a very liberal administration now and when that happens they usually toughen up on grazing.”
Greer expects he will be devoting much of his free time to working on water quality issues.
“It’s been a great experience, I’ve met a lot of people and I’m going to miss it,” he said.
Board chairman Alfred Anderson served with Greer for 17 of the 28 years and said his absence will be felt at the regional and Wyoming State Fair levels.
Greer held the distinctive honor of being named “Fair Person of the Year” and attended many Rocky Mountain Association of Fairs conventions. He served as a member of the Wyoming High School Rodeo Association board of directors from 1993-2003.
University of Wyoming Extension Cooperative agent Dallen Smith said Greer is a “kind heart who will help just about anybody do anything.”
Member Karen Sylvester, who served with Greer for seven years said, “ He didn’t just sit on the board, it was a priority.”
Bill and his wife Julie have raised three children and have always been strong supporters of 4-H and FFA, said Lorraine Gonzalez fair secretary.
Tyler Greer works for Williston Basin and lives in Worland with his wife Amber and three children. Daughter Barbara Jo lives in Cascade, Mont. Youngest son Ben is in the Marine Corps stationed at Buckley Air Force Base in Colorado.
“He’s already had one tour in Iraq doing intelligence to catch insurgents,” said Greer.
