As he had done an early-season meet in Cody, Greybull track coach Jeff Sukut opted to enter most of the members of his young team in junior varsity competition at the L.A. Kohnke Invitational Saturday in Powell.
As a result, the Buffs didn’t make much of an impression in the varsity standings. The girls did not score, as Carrinne Cheatham did not place in the 100-meter hurdles, nor did Ludi Mendez in the shotput and discus. If there’s a silver lining, it’s that both girls recorded season-best times and distances in those three events.
Cody won the varsity girls division, followed by Sheridan and Burlington.
Meanwhile, Powell was the class of the varsity boys division, with Cody and Sheridan rounding out the top three. The Buffs landed in 13th place, scoring nine points thanks to a third-place finish by Edward DeCabooter in the 1,600 meters and a sixth-place finish by the 400-meter team of Trevor Jensen, Shane Clucas, Dillon McCoy and Trevor Jensen.
Notable in his absence was Victor DeCabooter. The freshmen, who had been finishing just a tick ahead of his brother in distance races up until last week, is out for the season with a stress fracture in his leg. So it was Edward in the spotlight on Saturday in Powell. He ran a 5:02.5. While a couple seconds off his season-best, it was “still a great time for a freshman,” said Sukut.
The Buffs entered several throwers in varsity competition, but none of them scored. Cody Duffy was 15th, Hayden Goton 18th and Trevor Jensen 21st in the shotput, while in the discus Jensen led the way by placing 13th, followed by Duffy in 16th.
Junior varsity
Greybull turned in its highest finish in the junior varsity girls division, scoring 58 points and finishing third behind only Sheridan (147) and Worland (68).
Jessica Hunt won the triple jump, going 30-3 to better her previous best by nearly two inches. Hunt also added a second in the high jump by clearing 4-3 in “tough” jumping conditions, and a sixth in the 100 meters in a time of 14.47, her best clocking of the season.
Sprinter Alex Powers claimed a second in the 100-meter hurdles (19.13 seconds) and a third in the 100 meters (14.02, a personal best).
Jackie Miller was also a second-place finisher, running a 1:09.91 in the 400 meters.
Rounding out the scoring for the JV girls were Kyra Cundall, sixth in the 400 (1:20.7); Lindsay Kern, sixth in the shot put (24-10 ¾); and Karly Thomas, fourth in the 100 hurdles (20.09) and fifth in the long jump (12-1 ¾).
In the JV boys, Greybull finished in the middle of the pack. The Buffs scored 39 points, which left them behind Sheridan (147), Powell (108), Lovell (62) and Cody (59).
Shane Clucas led the way for the Buffs, winning the 200 in personal-best 24.32 and taking second in the 100 in 11.97, also a personal best.
Dillon McCoy ran a season-best 12.22 to place eighth in the 100.
Clay Cundall was second in both hurdle races, running an 18.07 in the 110s and a 46.91 in the 300s.
Damon Reil rounded out the scoring with a fifth in the shot put. With his heave of 33-11 ½, he bettered his personal best by nearly four inches.
This week
The Buffs were scheduled to compete at a meet in Pavilion, but a planned power outage there forced the cancellation of the competition.
Needing a meet, Sukut said he considered going to Lovell Saturday, but opted not to do so because his athletes did not want it to interfere with Prom. So he set his sights on Wright, which is hosting a meet Friday. The team will attend that meet, and then have an off day Saturday.
