The Worland pairing of Frank Gonsalez and Gary Gilmore posted 19 ½ points to win the rain-shortened Big Horn Redi-Mix Match Play Tournament held over the weekend at Midway Golf Course.
The rain that fell from the sky Sunday will prove to be a blessing for the course, but it was anything but for the 48 golfers who had logged 27 holes on Saturday and were looking forward to their push to the finish line.
With each of the 24 teams getting in three matches on Saturday, tournament officials went to the scorecards. One point was awarded for each hole won in match play. If competing teams split a hole, they got a half point. For match wins, a bonus point was awarded.
After Saturday, Gonsalez and Gilmore had 19 ½ points, making them the top team.
In second, with 19 points, were Preston Link of Greybull and Gordon Neumann of Worland.
There was a tie for third, with Riki Shimogaki of Basin and Wally Mayland of Greybull finishing at 18 ½ along with Gary Pangburn of Greybull and Chuck Hopkin of Basin.
Fifth place went to the team of Carl Olsen of Basin and Wayne Rea of Greybull, with 18 points.
Big Horn Redi-Mix sponsored the tournament, which was the first big event on the summer golf calendar. Looking ahead, the course will host the Linda Madden Memorial July 4, followed the next weekend, July 10-12, by the Security Bank Invitational.
The final two “majors” at Midway are the Midway Open July 31 through Aug. 2 and the Midway Club Championships Sept. 12-13.
