The Greybull-Cloud Peak wrestlers found tough competition in their dual with Powell last Thursday and at the Lovell Invitational on Saturday.
In Basin Thursday, G-CP won six matches over their Park County foe. Chris Ogg was one of three wrestlers with two matches, winning both his matches at 105 pounds. Ryan Sylvester at 90 pounds B division and Matt Brown at 126A both dropped their two matches.
Picking up one win against Powell in the A division was Austin Earl, 120. Falling in their A division matches were Zane Edeler, 155, Tanner Bernstein, 165, Spencer Redland, 175 and Cody Strauch at heavyweight.
In the B division, picking up wins were Jesus Burgos, 132, Tomas Mendoza, 138, and Tommy Bernstein, 132. Falling to their Powell opponents were Caleb Wursten and Quinton Kelly, both at 100, Christian Burns, 90, Cole Hill, 115, Garret Fowler, 155, Tyson Adam, 175 and Oscar Gomez, heavyweight.
Coach Shane Schaffner said, “We’re improving. Powell’s a good team and we wrestled well against them.” He said there were a lot of third period pins and that is from wrestlers being young and inexperienced. “We’re working to not get on our backs at all,” he said.
At the Lovell Invitational Strauch took first place in the A division at 175 pounds with a 2-0 record. One of the wins came over teammate Redland who was 1-1 and took second.
“Cody did a great job wrestling. He’s looking tough at 175 pounds,” Schaffner said.
Also placing in the A division was Ogg, third at 105 with a 1-1 record. Brown placed fourth at 126, Edeler fourth at 155 and Tanner Bernstein third at 165. All were 0-2 in the tournament.
Zack Zeller went undefeated to take first at 85 pounds and Calder Forcella was first at 138 with a 2-0 record in the B division. Schaffner said with wins in the last two tournaments he likely will be moving the two wrestlers up to the A division.
Gomez took first at heavyweight with a 2-0 record and Fowler also placed first, winning the only match at 155 pounds.
Others placing in the B division were Wursten, second with 2-1 record at 100 pounds; Kelly, fourth at 100 with 2-2 record; Tommy Bernstein, fourth, 2-0, 132 pounds; Mendoza, third, 2-1, 138 pounds; Luke Young, fourth, 0-2, 165.
The wrestlers hosted a quadrangular meet with Lovell, Rocky Mountain and Powell on Tuesday night and are headed to the Thermopolis Invitational at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
