Huskies 1A regional champs; Lady Huskies finish third

The Huskies claimed their third consecutive regional championship at the West Regional in Shoshoni last weekend and the Lady Huskies finished second – their highest finish in six years.

But the best news, according to Coach Ryan Olson, was that all of the Husky relay teams qualified for the State Meet in Casper this weekend. This has never happened before, Olson said. With 39 thinclads out this year, Olson said they could fill all relay teams with quality runners who were capable of winning or adding points for the team. It is a luxury he relished.

“We were flying high,” said Olson of his teams’ elation of what they accomplished in Shoshoni. An event to be celebrated for sure. He also noted that there were 35 personal bests recorded, some by small increments, some by a large margin – but all noteworthy and it showed that hard work and dedication pays off.

Gideon George was the biggest “point” earner for the boys, which was to be expected. The senior has worked hard all year, and had AQed for State competition in more events than he could register for.

“We are peaking at the right time,” said Coach Olson.

The Huskies knew that Cokeville was going to be the team to beat. And the two were neck-and-neck. Both teams had multiple placers in multiple events.

Burlington owned the high jump with five boys scoring points. Olson emphasized that every athlete contributed – some who have been unsung. Check Noah McMackin, who qualified in two events; Nathaniel Boreen who came through in the pole vault; Daniel Stanworth in the 300-hurdles; Clayton Edwards, Adam Bullinger, Pablo Mendez, Alex Perez, the list goes on and on.

The Lady Huskies had multiple placers and some new names were added to the Husky Hall of Fame.

Melissa Bullinger had a great meet, qualifying in both long distance and short distance competitions. Jessie Michaels, a freshman, was also a multiple event qualifier; senior Cheri Henderson had a good meet; Brooke Broederlow qualified in the 100-meter dash; Abby Olson in the 3200 – Brinly Casey was just one place away from a trip to state in the same event. Libby Bassett made it in the 100-hurdles. Victoria Nelson won the high jump with a PB. Joey Chatwin and Braelly Wardell were keys in several of the relay teams.

Each of the 11 seniors chipped in for the win, as did the 10 talented freshmen. Sandwiched in between are 7 juniors and 10 sophomores.

Looking ahead to Casper this weekend, Olson said he looks at Cokeville to be the biggest challenge but he said there are talented athletes from the “other” side of the state who will be in the mix also.

The Lady Huskies have got a lot of talent, a lot of desire; they will need all of that if they are to finish in the top tier of finishers.

Don’t count them out.
