Huskies on the march; heading to pre-regional meet Friday

The Burlington girls 4x100 relay team set a state qualifying mark of 56.57 seconds and Gideon George AQed in yet another event Saturday when he ran 11.24 in the 100-meter dash during competition at the Rocky Mountain Invitational. George’s time in the 100 puts him among the best in the state.

Jessie Michaels posted a first-place time of 13:19.09 in the 3,200, putting her second in the state in that event.

Coach Ryan Olson, proud of the way his athletes performed, noted that Kolby Broederlow was “right there” in the 300 hurdles, shooting for a school record that has stood for 25 years; he has a shot at an AQ in the event at the pre-regional meet in Thermopolis Friday.

The coach had high praise for George and Melissa Bullinger. Both seniors, Olson said, “are kids who will do anything you ask of them,” describing Bullinger as someone who dedicates herself to running not only in practices but off days as well.

Geroge has AQed in so many events, he, and his coach, will have to sort through to decide in which he will compete, both at regionals and at state. “He came up and told me he’d do whatever I wanted him to do.”

After a couple of rough weeks, Olson said his athletes are back in shape. He said at this stage of the season, a week away from regionals and two weeks away from state, “You don’t know when to push them and when to scale back; you want them in shape but you don’t want to risk injury.”

Olson has an enviable job facing him. He has five AQs in one event, multiple AQs in several events, so he’ll be weighing the odds, looking what other teams have and how they match up. It’s a job multiple coaches would love to take on.

Olson said there is tough competition in 1A and he looks to some exciting finishes at the regional and state meets.

Hopes are that all the Huskies remain injury-free after Friday’s meet in Thermopolis.

Events start at 12:30.
