Lady Huskies looking ahead

Last weekend was a mixed bag for the Burlington Lady Huskies. Low in numbers this year, the Huskies were split up at different tournaments, which complicated things quite a bit.

First year coach Erin Bassett explained that they were “pretty short-handed,” and hopes this changes in the weeks ahead.

Coach Bassett had seven athletes suited up for varsity as the team debuted in Lovell at the North Big Horn Invitational tournament. The lineup included Rylee Bassett, Avery Nelson, Julia Nelson, Victoria Nelson, Kelsi Nicholson, Braelly Wardell and Tia Winters.

“We had a lot of nerves going into the weekend,” Bassett explained. “It was great to be able to get lots of court time and break the ice.”

Burlington opened the tournament Friday with a two-set spit with the Greybull Buffs, 19-25, 25-18.

The second match went to the Rocky Mountain Grizzlies in two sets, 17-25, 16-25.

On Saturday the Huskies split with Wind River, 25-22, 16-25.

“We were able to identify some areas that need extra attention,” Bassett said, “and we are looking forward to meeting some of these teams in the regular season.”

Saturday is an important day for the Huskies. They will host Ten Sleep in a conference match-up at 4 p.m. On Tuesday, Sept. 7, they will be in Greybull for non-conference matches with the Buffs. Matches are scheduled at 4, 5 and 6 p.m.

JV had busy weekend

The JV had a busy weekend with matches in Cowley at the North Big Horn Invitational followed by a trip to Powell to play the Lady Panthers on Saturday.

The young Huskies host Ten Sleep in a match at 3 p.m. Saturday.
