A graveside service and burial of cremains of former Basin resident Jewel May McCracken will be held Memorial Day, Monday, May 30, at 2 p.m. at the old Shell Cemetery. Jewel, 66, died Feb. 4, 2016, in Escanaba, Mich.
Funeral services were held in Escanaba on Feb. 8 at the Church of Christ.
Jewel was born May 13, 1949, in Hamilton, Mont., the daughter of William and Vivian Maxwell. Jewel moved from Basin to Escanaba in 1987. She attended Bay de Noc Community College and earned her AA degree in childcare. She was a certified nursing assistant, worked as a CNA and was co-owner of Hugs and Love Daycare.
She was a member of the Church of Christ, the president of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 82, and president of the Delta Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Society.
She is survived by her husband, Fred M. McCracken Sr.; three sons, Richard Alan, Fred M. Jr., and Buckie S.; one daughter, Vivien Leah McCracken; sisters Kitty Maxwell Gipson of Greybull and Jeanette Lamphear (who died April 23, 2016); one brother, William Maxwell Jr.; two sisters-in-law, Elaine Maxwell Terry and Sharron Maxwell, and five grandchildren.
Kitty Gipson will host a family barbecue in the Fellowship Hall of the Shell Community Church immediately following the service.
