Sept. 26, 1930 – March 16, 2017
Charley D. Helling passed away March 16, 2017, at the age of 87. He was born on Sept. 26, 1930, in Mitchell, Neb., to Charley D. and Mildred Marie Helling.
After graduating from Huntley High School in 1950 Charley was drafted into the U.S. Army Aug. 20, 1951, as part of the ERC Arty in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged May 19, 1953, and went to the Nebraska Trade School on the GI Bill. After leaving the Army and completing trade school, Charley went to work for Heavy Duty Diesel Mechanics. He married the love of his life, Beverly C. Carrier, on April 30, 1954, in Mitchell, Neb. From there he worked for Keramie Tractor Equipment in Casper and then held a few other jobs before starting at Wyoming Department of Transportation in Casper and then in Rawlins. Charley and his family moved to the Big Horn Basin Sept. 1, 1971. He worked as the district shop foreman for WYDOT until he retired in 1987. Charley liked to keep busy so he went to work for the Midway Golf Course as a grounds keeper and then retired again in 1997.
Charley loved anything having to do with his wife, kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. His family was his favorite pastime. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is preceded in death by his parents Charley Sr. and Mildred Helling, his brother Wilford Helling and a nephew Jac Helling.
Charley is survived by his loving wife Beverly Helling, his son Leonard (Cathy) Helling, and daughter Fawn (Tom) Goton; by his grandchildren Tabatha (Dennis) Sweeny, Bob Goton, Clayton (Tabitha) Helling, Kasie (Aaron) Stewart, Amy (Aaron) Freed, Kyndra Goton, and seven great-grandchildren with another on the way.
A private graveside service will be held to celebrate Charley’s life. Memorials can be made in his honor to South Big Horn Senior Center, Greybull, c/o Atwood Family Funeral Directors, 620 Greybull Ave., Greybull, WY 82426. Arrangements have been entrusted to Atwood Family Funeral Directors.
