Almost a year ago, many of us became deeply invested in the story of Grant Gardner, a Minnesota man who disappeared while hiking in the Cloud Peak Wilderness Area of the Bighorn Mountains.

The monthly meeting of Greybull’s Town Council was held last Monday, May 11. The meeting began with a proposal for a street closure for the Days of ’49 burn out competition. Organizers requested the same spot as last year, between the stoplight and the planter. The closure was approved. 

School board: State ‘stealing’ donated money

A topic of lively discussion at Big Horn County School District No. 3’s May 12 school board meeting was a piece of the state’s recent school recalibration, which suggests that half of interest earned on all district accounts could be returned to the state by cutting it from the next year’s school funding. Accounts managed by the district accumulate an estimated $260,000 a year in interest, which would result in a $130,000 budget cut next year.

Greybull Rec center will host a free, kid friendly event where Big Horn County Search and Rescue, Wyoming Game and Fish and U.S. Forest Service representatives will be present to share important information on safe ways to recreate outdoors and what to do in an emergency situation.  The workshop will take place at the Herb Asp Community Center on Tuesday, June 2 at 6:30 p.m.

Greybull High School recognizes champions

Greybull High School’s star athlete and school leader Wyatt Whaley received the Buff of the Year Award for the second consecutive year at the Buff Champion Banquet on Monday, May 18. The junior was selected by the district’s coaches and club sponsors as the best of the best and honored for her many achievements this year, with All-State volleyball and All-Conference track recognitions. Whaley continues to break the school’s discus record and surpassed 1,000 career assists as the volleyball team’s setter this season.

Public comment open on landfill expansion

Public comment is open through June 15 on a permit amendment for the South Big Horn County construction and demolition landfill. The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality relayed in a press release that the proposed amendment would allow the landfill to increase its disposal capacity by constructing an additional disposal area. 

Shell Falls site will remain closed for 2026

Shell Falls Interpretive Site in Bighorn National Forest will remain closed this year as the U.S. Forest Service works to hire contractors to install a solar array, erect a storage building for electrical equipment, upgrade the septic system and improve the site’s water quality. Two million dollars in Great American Outdoors Act funding has been approved for the project, with the total estimated cost to be announced after a contract is awarded.
