Lady Buffs finish 12th at State

The foursome of Marlee Henson, Kelsie McColloch, Chaise Benasky and Julia Paul-Blazquez captured second in the 400-meter relay and freshman Wyatt Whaley earned fourth in the shot put to pace the Greybull Buffs at last weekend’s State 2A Track and Field Championships in Casper.
Coach Nolan Tracy took 14 athletes — the most for the program in several years — and while they fell short of matching their performances from the regional meet, the Buffs left the Oil City with plenty to feel good about.

G&F wrestles with how to handle illegal introduction of fish in Wyoming waters

SHERIDAN — Fish that are illegally introduced to non-native bodies of water can cause lasting impacts to the water’s ecosystem and a community’s economy, according to Wyoming Game and Fish officials.
An illegal introduction occurs when someone moves a fish from one body of water to another, Wyoming Game and Fish Department Chief of Fisheries Alan Osterland told the Wyoming Legislature’s Joint Travel, Recreation, Wildlife and Cultural Resources Committee earlier this week.

Riley Wiggins, Cruz Sorenson, Triston Gross and Liam Wisehart combined to win six individual events, leading Greybull Middle School’s seventh-grade boys to the Big Horn Conference track and field championship Saturday in Cowley.
Wiggins dominated the middle-distance races, winning the 400, the 800 and the 1,600 meter, while Sorenson captured first in the shot put and discus, Gross took the 100-meter hurdles and Wisehart the 200-meter hurdles.

Elementary netters compete in Billings

Greybull’s newest club sports team attended its first official tournament in Billings, Mont., last weekend, the 10th annual Big Sky Volleyfest Super Regional.
First started with 63 teams, the Super Regional has grown. This year saw 236 teams spread over 32 courts in seven locations. The Magic City was bustling with volleyball energy including athletes and fans clad in Buff blue and gold.

If you were a girl attending Greybull High School in the years prior to 1970, you know that the only activities for female students was being a member of the Pep Club, wearing gold and blue sweaters and cheering on your male counterparts in football and basketball.

GMS track teams capture team titles in Burlington

With a strong tailwind at their backs and a malfunctioning timing system, local athletes produced some truly eye-popping stats at Friday’s Burlington Invitational.   
Coach Becky Eichelberger put less stock in the numbers that the timing system produced than the individual and team finishes of her athletes.
And on that count, it was a very successful day for GMS.
The following athletes qualified for next week’s Best of the Best competition in Lander:
• Alan Burgos, in the 200 meters
• Jayden Marchant, in the long jump

Freshman Henson AQs in triple jump

After enduring a cold, windy Friday in Shoshoni, Greybull High School freshman Marlee Henson took advantage of more favorable weather conditions Saturday in Lovell where she bettered the state qualifying standard in the triple jump.
Henson’s leap of 32 feet, a personal record, was the best of the day by a 2A jumper.  The top four placers in the event were black-and-orange clad 3A competitors who hailed from Powell and Worland.  The winner went 35-5 1/2.

SBH Little League numbers strong as new season begins

Participation in the South Big Horn County Little League baseball program continues to be strong, with 129 players signed up to play on 12 teams starting next month.
While those numbers are down from last year’s record participation of 136 players and 13 teams, they still top the 2022 and 2021 seasons.
The league has formed four T-ball teams — Brewers, Pirates, Red Sox and Diamondbacks — and four coach-pitch teams — Royals, Astros, Rockies and Cardinals.

GMS rolls in relays, adds Best of the Best qualifiers

Greybull Middle School athletes won two relays, set several PRs and added five new Best of the Best qualifications last weekend in Shoshoni.
The meet was larger than anticipated, attracting close to 20 teams including a number of 3A schools.
“It was good to see some other competition that challenged our athletes,” said Coach Becky Echelberger. “With that came personal records for many on our team.”
Greybull’s wins came in the relays.
