BHC Public Health offers community CPR classes

Big Horn County Nurse Manager Hillary Mulley was at the commission’s Nov. 7 meeting to provide a department update.
CPR classes will be offered soon. Mulley said they would offer two classes — one for those wishing to renew their CPR card and one for those needing a new card. If there is sufficient interest, they will offer the classes once a month.
She said Public Health has finished up its flu clinics. They have the new Covid-19, RSV, pneumonia, and shingles vaccines available for those wanting them. Mulley said the cost of the vaccines has increased.
The department is doing blood pressure clinics again at the senior center in Lovell, as well as “Lunch and Learn.”
Mulley said they still have openings for a public health response coordinator (PHRC) and a nurse in the Greybull office.
She requested an executive session for personnel.

Average gas prices drop 11.3 cents in past week in Wyoming
CHEYENNE (WNE) — Average gasoline prices in Wyoming have fallen 11.3 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.37 per gallon on Monday, according to GasBuddy.com’s survey of 494 stations in Wyoming.
Prices in Wyoming are 30.4 cents per gallon lower than a month ago, and stand 18.7 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has fallen 4.2 cents in the last week and stands at $4.34 per gallon.
According to GasBuddy price reports, the lowest price in the state was $2.74 per gallon on Sunday, while the most expensive was $4.06 per gallon, a difference of $1.32 per gallon.

Audit sheds light on school district reserves

Among the items discussed at a briskly paced November meeting of the Big Horn County School District No. 3 board of trustees was the annual audit of its financial statements by Summit West CPA Group, Inc., of Lander.
In addition to identifying no material weaknesses and adequate internal controls, the auditors reported a decrease in the district’s general fund ending balance.
For fiscal year 2023, it was $2.61 million, down from $2.66 million in fiscal year 2022. In their report, the auditors wrote that “the continued uncertainty in the  property tax distribution was a bit of a concern, and ultimately the district was shorted $170,000 in taxes which had they been received, would have created an increase in (the) carryover.
“The district opted not to move any funds to the capital reserve account, but instead increased base salaries as the district demonstrated that the funds are available to sustain this over time.”

Yellowstone’s October visits increase 6% from year ago

JACKSON (WNE) — Recreational visits to Yellowstone National Park in October were up 26% over a year ago.
The total, 299,127 recreational visits represented a whopping 75% increase from October 2019, when “several short-term, weather-related road closures likely impacted visitation,” a Yellowstone press release said.
So far this year, Yellowstone has hosted 4,446,509 recreational visits, up 37% from 2022 and up 12% from 2019. In 2021, the year-to-date total for October was 4,789,349 visits.

GHS’s Paintbrush named state’s top 1A/2A yearbook

Greybull High School is celebrating a state championship this week after its journalism students returned from the recent Wyoming Student Media Convention in Laramie with a Golden Pony, which is given to the staff that produced the top yearbook in the 1A/2A division.
It’s the seventh state title since 2012 for the Paintbrush and the GHS journalism program under the direction of Lynn Forcella.  The run is even more remarkable when you consider that the contest wasn’t held in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19 and a shakeup in the board of the Wyoming High School Student Press Association, which has since been rebranded as the Wyoming Student Media Association.  
So, in effect, it’s seven titles in 10 years for GHS, with the first coming in 2012 and five straight between 2015 and 2019.

Yenny concert on BCAC stage this Sunday
Dr. Michael Yenny will play all your favorite Christmas music during a 4 p.m. performance Sunday, Nov. 19 at the Basin City Arts Center.  Dr. Yenny grew up in Greybull and loves to share his piano music.
The program includes “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” “Emmanuel Comes,”  “The Ghosts on Christmas Eve,” “Believe,” from “The Polar Express,” “O Christmas Tree,” “Morning Song,” “Silent Night,” “In the Pine Forest,” from “The Nutcracker Suite,”  “We Three Kings,“ “In Dulci Jubilo,”  “I’m So Glad Each Christmas Eve,” “Final Dream” and “Joy to the World.”
The concert is free and open to the public.  Donations are appreciated.  A reception will follow in the ballroom.  The Festival of Trees will be on display.

GHS Speech opens at novice meet

The Greybull High School Speech and Debate team kicked off its 2023-2024 season last Saturday with a third-place finish in 1A/2A at a novice-only tournament in Cody.
According to coach Joel Kuper, the novice event “brought together students that were competing in their first year and provided a more equitable and less stressful introduction to competitive speech.”
Seniors Katie Murph and Noela Libner and junior Elena Campos represented Greybull at the event.
Murph surpassed her competitors in Poetry, placing second or higher throughout her preliminary rounds and going on to capture first in the final. Libner also competed in Poetry and took fourth overall.
Campos put forth a strong performance in Original Oratory and ended the tournament in second place.

Fall musical brings Holmes’ world to life

The game is afoot! The fall community musical debuts tonight (Thursday) at 7 p.m. at the Greybull High School auditorium, with additional performances at the same time on Friday and Saturday.
Tickets can be purchased at the high school office in advance or at the door for $8 per seat or $7 for kids 10 and under and seniors over 60. Please bring exact change.
“Sherlock Holmes and the Mystery of the Crown Jewel” sees the renowned detective Sherlock Holmes (Scott Mattis) and his trusted partner Doctor Watson (Randy Tolman) facing the ultimate test as they seek to solve a case that could affect the future of the British Empire.

Leavitt Reservoir construction begins

From a mobile trailer parked along Bear Creek Road that’s connected to the outside world with satellite technology, Josh Barratta is perfectly positioned to monitor and report on the production of aggregate and the construction of a coffer dam that represent the first phase of the Leavitt Reservoir expansion project.
“It’s going well so far — just a little snow but nothing we can’t handle,” said Barratta, the senior project engineer for Big Sky Civil Contractors and Montana Civil Contractors. “We’re going to take advantage of all the nice weather days before winter.
“If the sun’s shining and the clay isn’t slippery and wet, we’re going to be out there.”

Veterans Day speaker spent 23 years in military

Tom Bercher had dual roles in Friday morning’s Veterans Day program at Greybull Middle School.
Normally the bagpiper, a role he’s played since moving to Big Horn County in 2013, Bercher was invited to speak this year and he shared some of his experiences with middle and high school students who filled one side of the GMS Gym.
He said he joined the military in 1983, right out of high school.
“I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I just knew I wanted to do something other than what I was doing at the time,” he said. “I’d already taken the military entrance exam and found out that I could join the infantry and get $8,000.  In 1983, $8,000 seemed like a lot of money, so I joined the infantry.
