Powell man pleads not guilty to wildlife violations

POWELL — A rural Powell resident is facing a stack of criminal charges that allege he committed multiple wildlife-related violations over the past two decades. 

Grant L. Cadwallader, who was born in 1977, is accused of illegally killing two grizzly bears some time ago and illegally collecting grizzly claws, golden and bald eagle talons and feathers and bighorn sheep skulls. 

The Park County Attorney’s Office filed the 18 misdemeanor charges against Cadwallader in late August. He pleaded not guilty to all counts during a Thursday appearance in Park County Circuit Court and was released on his own recognizance.

Burlington Ambulance Service receives new lifesaving equipment

Big Horn County Fire Protection District #4 applied for and received a grant for $104,617.57 to purchase a LifePak 15 with accessories and PowerLOAD/PowerPRO XT Cot. 

The grant came from the Hospitals and Healthcare Systems Preparedness and Infrastructure Program. It is part of the COVID-19 Health Disparity Grant Program. 

Christine Bullinger said that even with the grant, the ambulance would not be able to get the equipment if it weren’t for Big Horn REA and TCT. 

The grant was a reimbursable grant.  Bullinger explained “The ambulance service operates under the Big Horn County Fire Protection District #4 which certainly doesn’t have $100,000 available to use.”

McCullough Peaks decision to benefit herd, rangeland health

The Bureau of Land Management Cody Field Office’s action plan concerning population management of the McCullough Peaks Wild Horse Herd Management Area (HMA) is currently underway, with fertility control darting ongoing in the field and bait trap gathers scheduled to begin in mid-November.

The decision, outlined in an environmental assessment released Sept. 20, approved measures to reestablish the Appropriate Management Level (AML) for the McCullough Peaks herd through bait trap gathers, selective removals and fertility control.

Commissioners hear from Manderson police chief

Manderson Police Chief BJ Kidgell spoke to the county commissioners at their Oct. 3 meeting. He wanted to address his concerns and observations about a proposed increase in fees and comments that had been made at a commission meeting in August.

Town plans to increase utility rate

Greybull residents could see some increases in their town utility bills early next year after an audit revealed that the rates it’s currently charging are not keeping up with inflation and maintaining adequate reserves.

James Seckman of Seckman and Thomas, CPA, otherwise gave the town high marks across the board, telling council members Monday night that he issued a “clean or unqualified opinion” of its financial statement and found no material weaknesses in internal controls.

BLM to burn slash piles near Shell

The Bureau of Land Management Wind River/Bighorn Basin District tentatively plans to burn slash piles within the Cody, Lander and Worland field office areas this fall and winter. These pile burns will reduce accumulated slash from previous mechanical thinning projects. 

Pile burning is contingent upon fuel moistures and weather meeting appropriate treatment conditions on site. Smoke may be visible from surrounding areas during the pile burning and days following as slash material consumes.

In addition to the playoff implications, Friday night’s Greybull-Riverside game could also have some historical significance as it could be the last time the two south Big Horn County rivals meet on the gridiron.

A merging of the football programs has been discussed in recent weeks as Riverside grapples with low numbers and the prospect of a return to six-man football for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years.

Council grants CUP for Airbnb over objections

Is an Airbnb just another type of rental property or does the short-term nature of its stays make it more akin to a motel?

Greybull Town Council members have been wrestling with that question and others since their September meeting, when Ian Crouse’s request for conditional use permit to operate an Airbnb at 700 N. Third St. generated arguments on both sides of the issue.

Chinese restaurant to close

A popular Chinese restaurant in downtown Greybull, Lan's Beijing Garden is closing at the end of the week.

Lan Kang, who took over the restaurant after the passing of her husband Denny in 2020, says it's her only option, pointing out that her cook and friend Martin Tang is returning to China and that she's been unable to hire anyone to replace him.

"It's sad," she said. "I've been here for a while and the community's been very nice to me."

Beijing Garden opened in September 2009 under the ownership of Denny Kang.  He ran it by himself for several years before he and Lan met and she moved here in 2014.  They married early the next year and they ran the business together until his death in March 2020.  Since then, she's been at the helm.
