GHS opens track season

Coach Nolan Tracy is expecting 11 or 12 teams and more than 200 athletes to converge on Greybull Saturday for the Bill Gerrard Invitational.  For many of them, it will serve as the opener of the 2021 track and field season.

Field events start at 10 a.m., with the running events to follow at 11 a.m.

“It’s been two years since we had a meet, so just to be able to host one again is great,” said Tracy.  “I was talking to (senior) Gaven (McColloch) about the fact that the last time he and our other seniors competed, they were sophomores.

“It’s a weird situation we don’t normally have to deal with, but it’s just awesome getting kids on the track again.”

Weather permitting, the Greybull Buff track team will make its season debut on Saturday at the Wind River Invitational.  

Coach Nolan Tracy begins his first season at the helm of the program after many years of assisting the now-retired Jeff Sukut with a roster of 24 kids.  It’s heavy on underclassmen, with 16 freshmen and sophomores.

Buffs drop two at state, finish 7-15

Greybull’s first appearance in the State 2A Basketball Championships since 2016 didn’t go as planned, as the Buffs were overwhelmed by 2A East champ Sundance 55-36 in Friday’s opening round and bounced from the tournament with a 47-40 loss to Big Horn on Saturday.

“We didn’t play our best basketball, that’s for sure,” said Coach Logan Burningham. “With an inexperienced team going to state for the first time, there was some state shock.  I think we experienced that a few times during the weekend.”

It was a disappointing end to an up and down season.  The Buffs struggled to win early, losing nine of their first 11. But that was followed by a stretch in which they won five of their next seven, with the last of those wins coming in quad play over Shoshoni to earn a berth in the state tournament.

Buffs sweep conference foes

The Greybull Buffs picked up a pair of important Class 2A Northwest Conference wins last week, handling Riverside 56-33 on Thursday and using a buzzer beater to stun Shoshoni 54-52 on Friday before seeing their three-game win streak end in a 77-58 defeat to Tongue River on Saturday.

Greybull heads into the final week of the regular season with a 5-10 record, but with the arrows pointing up.  The Buffs didn’t top 50 points in any of their first nine games, but have now done so in five of their past six, going 4-2 over that stretch.

Coach Logan Burningham said he was “really happy” with this team’s play last week, citing the two conference wins. “And even in the loss (to Tongue River), we saw some positives come out of it.”

Lady Buffs slip by Meeteetse 57-51

The Lady Buffs had a different look to them when they took the court against Meeteetse for a non-conference game last week, a game they won 57-51. The Longhorns are a talented 1A team that gave the Buffs all they could handle. 

“What a crazy week,” said Coach Kyndra Goton, as she explained that with three of her regular starters out on quarantine, she had to “reach down” and pull some of her younger, less experienced players up a level.  Torrey Sanford and Kinley Hunt got starting nods and Kennedy Craft and Rylee Peasley saw additional minutes.  The four combined for 13 points.

The good news is the younger Buffs stepped up, played with a lot of intensity, and had some fun playing with the “starters” who weren’t on quarantine.

“They had a certain spark about them,” Goton said. “They seemed to have a little fun while still accomplishing some good things. It was a great morale boost.”

Tough sledding for Buffs against Rocky

Just when the Buffs thought their offense was trending in the right direction, along came top-ranked Rocky Mountain.

The Grizzlies won the first meeting of the season between the long-time rivals Friday night in Cowley, smothering Greybull 73-21 to remain perfect in Class 2A Northwest Conference play and drop the Buffs to 2-9 overall, 1-2 in the conference.

The stats didn’t paint a pretty picture.  

The 21 points were a season-low for the Buffs, who got off just 29 shots from the field, sank only 24 percent of them and finished with 26 turnovers.

“They were pretty good defensively, long and lengthy, and we didn’t get a lot of good looks,” said Coach Logan Burningham.  “Every shot we took, it seemed like we had a hand in our face.”

In addition to not shooting well, the Buffs managed just four offensive rebounds and struggled against the full-court press.  

Individual wins highlight Moorcroft trip

In a normal year, Greybull-Riverside would have seen just about every 2A wrestling team in the state by now.  But with COVID-19 wiping usual in-season tournaments off the schedule, that hasn’t been the case in 2020-21.

Teams have had to hunt for matchups, and with each weekend, Coach Tom Harrington and his team are getting opposed to new squads.  Last weekend gave G-R its first look of the season at the reigning state champion Moorcroft Wolves.  On Friday, they’ll see Saratoga.  But time is running out.  The state tournament is now less than a month away.

“We’re having a season — that’s the best part,” said Harrington. “But it’s a little frustrating too — other teams are getting to mix it up a little better.  We’d like to see Kemmerer, Cokeville, Southeast and Lusk — they’re teams we’d normally see at Don Runner or Shoshoni.  Now we don’t see them and we won’t know what they’ve got until we get to the state tournament.

Buffs held down in losses to Burlington, Wind River

The Greybull Buffs were unable to get on track in their first two games of the new year, as they continued to be plagued by a sputtering offense in a 65-43 loss in Burlington Thursday night and a 68-44 setback in their home opener against Wind River Saturday afternoon.

Greybull took a 1-5 record into its game Tuesday night in Thermopolis, and with the start of Class 2A Northwest Conference play on the horizon, time is starting to run out in the search for answers to what ails the Buffs.

In both games last week, the Buffs played inspired ball early despite the absence of one of their top scorers and rebounders in Jesus Hernandez, who was out sick. Irving Castro, another regular, played in Burlington but missed the Wind River game.

Winter sports seasons resuming

The two-week vacation gave Coach Kyndra Goton and the Lady Buffs time to regroup, get healthy and hone a few skills in preparation for the 2021 season opener; the Buffs will be in Burlington today to play the Lady Huskies at 4/5:30.

“Practices over the break were good,” Goton said. “The girls  worked hard. We wanted to get as much time in the gym as possible.”

Four returning starters give Buffs hope

The Greybull Buffs came within a basket of qualifying for last year’s State 2A Basketball Championships. As disappointing as that 50-48 regional loss to Tongue River was, coaches and players found comfort in the fact that the core of the team would get another shot.

Ben Kraft was the only senior who saw quality minutes in Riverton and his combination of scoring (11.3 ppg), defense and leadership will be tough to replace. But on the sunny side, the Buffs return everyone else who contributed to that regional squad, including seniors Jesus Hernandez and Isaac Thueson. 

Hernandez, a forward/center, averaged 8.2 points and 7.9 rebounds per game while Thueson went for 10.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game
