Gary Delano Bernard

February 18, 1938 - January 6, 2026

Gary Delano Bernard, age 87, peacefully passed into the presence of his Lord during the early morning hours of Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2026, at his home in Greybull, Wyo. He was born Feb. 18, 1938, in Greybull and was raised in Emblem, Wyo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Phillip August “Frenchie” Bernard and Rosie Bertha (née Reinke) Bernard; his siblings, Robert Peterson and David Philip Bernard; and granddaughter, Ashley Bernard.

Gary graduated from Greybull High School in 1956 and spent a year as an apprentice at a plumbing and cooling business in Casper, Wyo., before returning to Greybull to work for Dresser Minerals and Burlington Northern (BN). He later joined Wyo-Ben, Inc., where he became plant superintendent and worked there until 1977. Following that, Gary was employed by Burlington Northern-Santa Fe (BNSF) until his retirement.

Gary dedicated several years as chair for the Days of ‘49 celebration and contributed to organizing various individual events, such as the rodeo. Over the years, he was also an active member of the Lions Club, B.P.O.E., A.F. & A.M., Rotary Club, and the Chamber of Commerce, as well as a lifetime member of the Midway Golf Club. Gary also served on the Big Horn County School District No. 3 Board from 1978-80.

Gary always valued his roots on Emblem Bench, frequently visiting his relatives and assisting his parents on the farm. He also raised Simmental cattle for breeding on his acreage near the airport, a commitment he loved and continued long after retiring from BNSF.

Although he was basically a serious person and worked tirelessly to raise and support his family, Gary liked people and had a great sense of humor and the “gift of gab,” always finding time to make conversation.

He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Anita Rae (née Cox) Bernard; his children, Alan J. Bernard (Cristina), Brian J. Bernard, and Candace R. Bernard, along with two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, 2026, at the Emblem Cemetery.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Atwood Family Funeral Directors.
