Two years ago, Lovell High School lost ag teacher Jared Boardman to the family ranch near Frannie. Last fall, the new agriculture teacher, Sam Hansen, came the opposite direction, moving from commercial agriculture to education as the new LHS ag teacher and FFA advisor.

Hansen grew up in Lingle, Wyo., and graduated from the University of Wyoming with a degree in agriculture business. He said he managed a large diversified farm and ranch for eight years before deciding to become an educator.

“I realized that the skills and knowledge I developed working in production agriculture really only benefited me and the people I did business with,” he said. “I was drawn to the field of agricultural education because I wanted to inspire and impact others who can contribute to the agriculture industry and ensure that it continues to flourish here in Wyoming.

“I want my students and FFA members to have the skills they need to be successful regardless of whether they are headed to college, so my teaching philosophy is based on real-world problem solving where students determine their own learning outcomes. I currently teach roughly 75 students enrolled in agriculture and/or welding courses at LHS. Our Lovell FFA members are currently practicing for a busy spring schedule of sales, livestock, poultry, ag mechanics and environment and natural resource contests.”

Hansen has been married to his wife, Susan, for 10 years, and the couple has three children ages 4, 2 and five months.

“I love to hunt, fish and camp, and we are thrilled about living in such close proximity to those interests,” he said.
