Josey Steed receives Bob Carey Award

Senior Josey Steed was honored with the Bob Carey Memorial Award this weekend. 

The Carey Award was established in 1996 in honor of long-time Lander High School coach Bob Carey. He is the only coach in Wyoming to win both boys and girls state basketball titles. Carey was also instrumental in starting girls basketball in Wyoming.

To be nominated for the Carey Award, a senior basketball player must show leadership ability, character, athletic ability and community involvement. 

“Josey has participated in basketball and volleyball all four years of high school and was also involved in National Honor Society, FFA and student council. She represents her class as senior class president as well as an anticipated valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA,” her coach Eric Honeyman read during the presentation. “Josey holds the secretary position in both the National Honor Society and her FFA chapter. Throughout her sports career, she has earned all-conference and all-state in both basketball as a junior and in volleyball as a senior.”

Rocky Mountain High School principal Tim Winland said Steed is as worthy of the award as anyone can be. 

“I can’t think of a more deserving recipient for this award,” Winland said. “Josey embodies the characteristics of a student athlete. Her leadership in the classroom and on the court is invaluable and indicative of her work ethic. She is a stabilizing factor that successful teams and schools yearn for. Josey is a great example to everyone she comes in contact with. We will miss her talents tremendously.”
