HUBZone trainings next month in Lovell, Powell, Cody

The U.S. Small Business Administration, in partnership with the Wyoming SBDC Apex Accelerator, will hold trainings next month to help businesses in Big Horn and Park counties take advantage of the SBA HUBZone program and assist them with federal contracting.
HUBZones (Historically Underutilized Business Zones) are determined by either governor designations or census tracts and are a great avenue for small businesses to win government contracts to help their businesses grow.  Big Horn County is now a fully designated HUBZone. 
The U.S. government is the largest customer in the world. It buys all types of products and services — in both large and small quantities — and the government works to make sure small businesses get at least 23% of all federal contracting dollars. Government contracting is a great way to diversify your revenues and customer base.  

Veterans Welcome Home Day events planned for next Saturday

Big Horn County veterans and their families are welcome to attend Welcome Home Day events scheduled for Saturday, March 23 in Cody and Powell.
The events will be hosted by Wyoming Veterans Commission District 5, which includes Hot Springs, Washakie, Big Horn and Park Counties.
Governor Mark Gordon, Major General Greg Porter and Wyoming Veterans Commission Chairman Kenneth Persson are expected to deliver remarks.
The celebration begins with a Welcome Home Ceremony from 11 to 11:45 a.m. at the Cody Alliance Church, 147 Cooper Lane East, before shifting to Powell for a lunch from 12:15 to 1 p.m. and a Welcome Home Ceremony from 1 to 1:45 p.m., both at American Legion Post #26, 143 S Clark St.
The lunch is free for veterans and their families.

 

GHS Speech shares state runner-up honor State

The Greybull High School speech team faced two definitive tournaments that brought its 2023-24 season to a close this past weekend. While the team met unfavorable results at the Wind River District qualifier, Greybull returned from Wyoming State Speech with a second-place trophy in 1A/2A and a host of special awards.
Greybull had to fight point for point at the state tournament against 32 schools, 10 of which belonged to 1A/2A programs. Coach Joel Kuper said final rounds “were dominated by the larger schools, so the 1A/2A competition was very close and decided in semi-final rounds.”
Three Greybull students broke through to earn a place on the 1A/2A stage.

Library to hold Easter drawings

The time is ‘March’ing on. This month at the Greybull Public Library, we are having an Easter drawing for the adults/young adults/youth and the preschool – third Grade. For the kiddos, there is an Easter Basket drawing. They can come in, check out some books and put their name in for the Easter Basket. For the older group, we have a jar full of Hershey’s chocolate eggs. After checking out a book, you can make a guess as to how many eggs are in the jar; closest guess wins the jar of eggs. If there are more than one with the correct number, we will have a drawing from those who answered correctly. We will have the drawing Thursday, March 28, after Story Time. Be sure to come in often this month and put in your guess and name each time. The more guesses you put in, the more chances of getting the right number.

Science team reigns at State

Five Greybull High School students traveled with their research projects to the 2024 Wyoming State Science Fair in Laramie and returned home with a collection of special awards, category awards and the team title in the Senior division.
Greybull was the top school at the competition with 40 points, narrowly beating Laramie with 36 points. Cheyenne Central came in third with a distant 19 points.
Chaise Benasky captured first place in the Microbiology category with her project “Determining the Ability of Specific Conifer Endophytic Fungi to Control Bacterial Populations.” She received special awards from the US Air Force, a second-place award from IMBRE, a second-place award from the US Naval Science Dept. and a US Metric Association award.

WHP steps up patrols for St. Paddy’s weekend
The Wyoming Highway Patrol will participate in the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) – Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort (CARE) Section, a national traffic-enforcement initiative aimed at improving highway safety during high-risk periods.
As part of this concerted effort, law enforcement agencies across the nation intensify their presence on interstate and U.S. highways to mitigate traffic accidents during specific holiday and seasonal events.
The Wyoming Highway Patrol’s enhanced enforcement effort commenced March 9 and will continue through midnight on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. During this timeframe, the agency will diligently track its activity, focusing on the following:
-Monitoring speeding violations and aggressive driving behaviors.
-Enforcing seatbelt and child restraint laws to promote occupant safety.

GHS student qualifies for National STEM Challenge

Greybull senior Tyler Searfoss will be competing at the US National STEM Challenge in April in Washington DC. Tyler was selected through a series of applications and judgings to make the final group to compete at the national level.
The National STEM Challenge is a new competition that brings together the top applicants from all 50 states to share their research, meet science experts and compete for additional recognition and awards.

100 Years Ago: Pool hall operator faces gambling charge

County Attorney W.C. Snow filed information in the district court on Tuesday charging Chas J. Shirran of the Ideal pool hall of Greybull with gambling. He appeared in court yesterday and gave bond.
The Greybull basketeers were eliminated by Mountainview in the second game played by a score of 19 to 7. Details of the game have not been received by the time of going to press.

Curators will hunt for dinosaur skeletons near here this summer. The New York expedition will make headquarters at the Cloverly post office in a few weeks.
The junior class play, “A Poor Married Man,” will be presented Friday evening, March 23, at the high school auditorium. The action throughout is humorous and rapid. There are no dull moments.

Council considers request to take over Shell water system

The Shell Town Water Improvement District has asked the Town of Greybull to take over its water system.
Dave Boettel spoke on its behalf at Monday’s town council meeting.  He said the district is an “island within an island,” noting that the Town of Greybull is already responsible for the water line leading into and out of Shell and recently installed a new line for the Shell bar that’s under construction.
Carrie Hunt, the town administrator, said the new line was needed because the bar is required to have a water line larger than three-quarter inch, which meant the town had to come off with a 2-inch line.
Boettel said the Shell Town district has made significant improvements in recent years, moving to meter reading technology that’s similar to what Greybull uses while installing new taps and shut off valves.

Emotions over McCullough Peaks wild horse gather boil over

POWELL — Federal officials and wild horse supporters are calling for calm after highly emotionally charged threats were made to Bureau of Land Management employees over the removal of wild horses in the agency’s efforts to reach appropriate management levels within the McCullough Peaks Herd Management Area.
“Please don’t attack BLM employees,” said Deputy State Director of Communications for BLM Wyoming Brad Purdy in an interview with the Tribune, saying he understands the passion and emotion for the herd. “When people are very emotional, when people are very passionate about something, at times, you don’t get the best version of that person.”
The bait trap gather currently underway by BLM biologists and employees began tragically earlier this year with the death of a filly known as Kat Ballou, fueling emotional outbursts by some of the many thousands of fans of the herd.
