The Lady Buffs had a tough go at the Big Horn Basin Hoops Classic in Powell and Cowley over the weekend, going 1-3.

They opened the tournament against Powell on Friday.

“We had a pretty difficult time with [Powell’s] press.  They were very athletic, quick, and didn’t miss a lot of shots against us.  We couldn’t get any rhythm on offense and just couldn’t slow them down,” Coach Jeff Hunt said.

Perla Rodriguez led Greybull in scoring with six and rebounds with eight. Teammate Marlee Henson provided six steals and two assists. The Buffs dropped the game 66-22 and came away worn out. In their next match, Lovell, they faced many of the same difficulties.

“We played tired early from playing Powell earlier in the day.  We just couldn’t slow them down once again,” Coach Hunt commented.

Scoring was again led by Rodriguez with 11, but with a better spread across the team this time around; Henson put up nine and Shayne Cheatham seven. Henson, Cheatham and Caitlyn Hunt each hit two 3-pointers. Greybull was plagued with turnovers, though, racking up 38, and the Buffs ultimately fell 69-38.

It was a slow start against Burlington Saturday morning, and the Buffs ended the half down 21-14. Greybull came back in the second half with a high-pressure press that put the Huskies out of sync.

“The difference in the game actually came down to our 3-point shooting,” Coach Hunt said. “We made six 3s and they made zero. Shayne Cheatham shot lights out in this game and was 4-5 from the 3-point line. Caitlyn Hunt made two more.”

After ending the third quarter tied 29-29, the Buffs came through with a hard-fought 44-42 win. Cheatham brought in 14 points for the Buffs, followed by Rodriguez with 13.

“Worland was our fourth game of the weekend, and we played like it was,” Coach Hunt said. “We didn’t have a lot of gas in the tank. Every team we played pressed us and we were just tired. We played them tough for a while, but they took advantage of our low numbers and pressed us most of the game.”

Brooklyn Allen scored 10, followed by Rodriguez with nine. The Buffs ended the tourney with a 50-33 loss.

“I was proud of how our girls reacted,” Coach Hunt said. “We never really gave up, but we definitely still need to be in better shape if we are going to finish strong down the stretch.”

The Buffs will look to refill the tank before their first conference game on Friday.

The team will travel to Cowley to take on the Rocky Mountain Grizzlies at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, they host Thermop at noon and 1:30 p.m.
