High call volume delays LIEAP

TORRINGTON (WNE) — The Wyoming Low Income Energy Assistance Program is experiencing significant delays in responding to applicants due to high call volumes since opening its priority application season September 2.

The program, administered by the Wyoming Department of Family Services, is currently accepting applications only from priority households including seniors ages 60 and over, families with children five and under and individuals with disabilities.

All other eligible Wyoming households can apply starting October 1 through April 30, 2026.

Program officials said their team is working to respond as quickly as possible to the overwhelming response.

Crisis benefits for disconnections, empty or nearly empty fuel tanks and required deposits will be available starting October 1.

The program will begin making payments for unregulated fuel bills – including propane, pellets, wood, heating oil and coal – dated on or after October 1.

Payments for regulated fuel bills covering natural gas and electricity are for bills dated on or after November 1.

Applicants can apply online at lieapwyo.org or call 1-800-246-4221. Those who cannot get through immediately are encouraged to leave a callback number. The phone system will hold callers’ places in line and return calls when program specialists become available.

Last season, the program distributed $6.1 million to help 8,236 Wyoming households pay heating costs. It receives federal funding through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The program assists both homeowners and renters, including those in permanently parked RVs.   To qualify, households must meet income requirements with limits up to 60% of the state’s median income. A four-person household must have an annual income of $68,902 or less.

Additional information and program flyers are available at lieapwyo.org.
