Second boys 400-relay team qualifies for state

The Greybull Buffs saw several of their athletes set personal records at last week’s Shoshoni Invitational, which was moved up two days to Tuesday, April 22 due to concerns about inclement weather.

The meet was a small one, with about a dozen boys’ and girls’ teams in the field.

No new state qualifiers emerged for the Buffs.  The 400-meter relay team, which had previously punched its ticket to Casper, again bettered the 2A standard, finishing in 47.28 seconds which was good for first place.

Coach Nolan Tracy has been tweaking the makeup of that foursome.

The first time it qualified, it consisted of Carter Peasley, Blade Baker, Anthony Chacon and Jesse Baker, who ran a 47.10.

In Shoshoni, Caiden Sorenson ran the third leg in place of Chacon.

“Both versions have now qualified,” Tracy said, adding. “Blade and Jesse are our two fastest runners so they’re pretty set on the straights; now we’re just trying to find the two fastest corner runners.  Sorensen’s in the lead for the third leg, so it’s going to come down to Anthony and Carter for who is our starter.

“We’ll see after this week — this will probably be the last week we mix up that order.”

The Buffs who set PRs in Shoshoni included Brown (11.93 seconds), Chacon (12.55) and Sorenson (12.6) in the open 100 and Nikoah Sorensen in the 200 (25.64).

As a team, the boys placed fifth.

Girls highlights

Marlee Henson and Wyatt Whaley picked up Greybull’s only wins in individual events, with Henson taking the 400 meters and Whaley the shot put to power the Lady Buffs to a third-place finish.

The Lady Buffs didn’t collect their usual points in the relays, as the 400-meter foursome was disqualified and the sprint medley relay team did not run, but saw more encouraging growth from their freshmen.

Ashlyn Chacon turned in her best performance of the season in the 100-meter (18.56) and 300-meter hurdles (53.67).  The same went for Caitlyn Hunt, in the 100 hurdles (19.2) and triple jump (30-3), and Avery Allen in the triple jump (28-9 1/2).

“Seems like every meet, one or two of them get a new PR in something,” said Tracy.

The Buffs are scheduled to compete at the Rocky Mountain Invitational on Saturday, April 25.
