Greybull-Riverside got off to a fast start at Saturday’s Brawl in the Basin, winning 10 straight matches before leveling off over the course of nine grueling hours of middle school wrestling in Worland.
From a big-picture standpoint, the team continues to improve. “We have since the first weekend,” said Coach Mark Sanford. “A lot of things have gotten better. Their intensity definitely has, and they are really battling, which is what you want to see.”
The progress is showing up in individual matchups that are more competitive the second and third time around than they were early in the season.  G-R wrestlers are closing the gaps in scoring and extending matches.
“The effort’s been good all year, but we’re starting to figure a few things out,” he said. “On our takedowns, we’re still not getting what we need.  But as far as our wrestling on the mat, we’re doing better.”
G-R entered only two wrestlers in the A division. Both placed with Isaiah Palato capturing second place and Riley Wiggins fourth in their respective weight classes.
Other highlights included the performance of Emma Williams, a first-time wrestler who joined the team late and won two of three matches, and Levi Cochrane, who rode an overtime victory in his final match to a first-place finish in his weight class.
G-R hosted a dual with Worland on Tuesday afternoon and will head to Shoshoni for a tournament on Friday afternoon, with a start time of 2 p.m.
