Philip Turner Davis

Philip Davis was born in Greybull, Wyo., the firstborn of Melba and Jonathan Davis, and spent much of his first year living west of Greybull in a one-room log cabin built of logs his father had hauled off the Big Horns.
His brother, Tom, was born 18 months later, and some of Philip’s earliest memories were of staying with his Davis grandparents on the family farm on Emblem Bench. “Grandma made her own lye soap and washed her clothes on a washboard. All the cooking and heating was done on a wood stove, so the water bucket would be frozen many mornings in the winter time.” His sister, Susan, was born in 1942.

Death Notice

Don A. Schlaf, 85, of Cody, passed away on Jan. 19, 2024, at the Spirit Mountain Hospice House.
Graveside services will be held on April 3, 2024, at 2 p.m. at the Burlington Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Downrange Warriors, PO Box 2251, Cody, WY 82414.

Tom Black

Donald Thomas Black passed away Jan. 22, 2024. Tom was born to Sid (Highland) and Tex Black in Neiber, Wyo., Nov. 16, 1931. Tom’s mother died during his birth, so his earliest years were spent in Meeteetse and Shell under the care of his grandmother, Becky Highland.
Al Metzler married Becky when Tom was 5 years old. Together they raised Tom in Basin where he graduated from high school in 1949. Tom married Adella Boelens in 1951. He was drafted into the army in 1951 during the Korean War.
The couple started their family while stationed at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri. Upon discharge from military service, Tom and Del returned to Basin where his 30-year career as an electrical lineman for Big Horn Rural Electric got underway.

James Leroy “Jim” Burris

James L. Burris, 82, fulfilled his life at Worland Healthcare and Rehab, Jan. 17, 2024. “Grandpa” Jim was born in Worland March 25, 1941, and was the only child born to Roy and Eunice (Chappell) Burris. Jim was raised on Orchard Bench Road near Manderson, Wyo., where he and his father also tended a farm. He attended Manderson School District from youth to high school graduation in 1960. He became an avid member of the Big Horn County Fair and FFA programs. Jim attributed his growth in FFA to his showing of Jersey and Angus cattle, and also sheep, along with his duties as Sentinel. On Sept. 9, 1963, he married Kitty (Maxwell) Gibson. Within his adult years, his pride of work was shown through his passionate caring of lawns in and around the southern Big Horn County areas.

Misti Michelle (Brown) Summerlin

Misti Michelle (Brown) Summerlin, 49, of Billings, Mont., passed away on Friday, Dec. 15, 2023, with her daughter Shelby by her side. She was born in Lander, Wyo., on Aug. 10, 1974, to Tim and Janice Brown. They made their home in Riverton, Wyo., before moving to Greybull, Wyo, in 1984. Misti graduated Greybull High School in 1993.
Misti began her long, hard fight with cancer at the age of 3. She fought numerous cancers her entire life. She never let this slow or get her down.
Misti helped all who came into her life. She loved volunteering at thrift stores and shelters in the Billings area. If someone needed anything, she was the first one there for them. She enjoyed crafting and knitting countless scarves for family and friends.

Beata Esther Wamhoff

Beata Esther Wamhoff, a humble and faithful servant of the Lord, passed peacefully at the age of 103 into the presence of her Savior on Dec. 13, 2023.
The firstborn of German immigrants, she was born on Nov. 28, 1920, at the beginning of the Roaring Twenties in Lovell. She grew up during the Great Depression, moving from Wyoming to Michigan and back again. She graduated from Cowley High School in 1939 and was the first in her family to graduate from high school. After graduation she went to work as a counter girl for Lovell Drug, giving most of her paycheck to her parents to help pay the “depression bills.” While working at the drugstore, she couldn’t help but notice a tall, dark and handsome man from Emblem.
