Remembering a hero

This community is proud of its veterans who have served the United States of America, protecting the nation without fanfare or accolades, then returning, as hard as it may be, to “a normal life.”
We have told their stories — from World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War, the war in Afghanistan and other conflicts that have arisen.
We have recounted stories of high school teenagers, young men, who joined the military before they graduated, because they wanted to serve.
Extraordinary stories, each and every one.
But we ran across a story of a hero, a Greybull High School graduate who went unnoticed, unheralded, until we happened to find an article in the Feb. 10, 1944, issue with the headline: “Leo Boelens makes escape from Jap Prison Camp,” and the subhead, “Greybull High School graduate is one of 10 men to elude Nips in miraculous venture.”

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Story Time: Thursday, 11 a.m. to noon.
Book Club meets last Wednesday of every month, 5 p.m.

Roller Rink Skating: Fridays and Saturdays.  Family Skate (All Ages): 6:30 to 7:15 p.m.   Open Skate (All Ages): 7:30 to 9 p.m. $2 with own skates, $3 to rent.

American Legion Oratorical Contest held at GHS

Greybull High School was the site of the recent District 4 competition in the American Legion Oratorical Contest, which exists to develop deeper knowledge and appreciation for the U.S. Constitution among high school students.
The district competition produced a winner in Riley Laffin, a Lovell High School senior, who went on to also win the state competition held last weekend.  The other participant in the district contest was Audrey Johnson, who attends Powell High School.
Since 1938, the program has presented participants with an academic speaking challenge that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our nation’s laws, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizenship.

TCT support sessions are now by appointment only
The Greybull Public Library has announced a schedule change for the technical support sessions offered by TCT.
The telecommunications company will still send a support specialist to the library on the first Wednesday of each month, but it will be by appointment only.
If you are needing help with one of your technical devices, you can set up an appointment to meet with a TCT IT support specialist at the library by going to https://bit.ly/TCTGreybullLibrary. The TCT IT support specialists will only be coming on days they have someone signed up to meet with.

State unemployment unchanged at 2.8% in February

The Research and Planning section of the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services reports that the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was unchanged from January to February at 2.8%. Wyoming’s unemployment rate was lower than its year-ago level of 3.1% and much lower than the current U.S. unemployment rate of 3.9%.
From January to February, most county unemployment rates followed their normal seasonal pattern and remained stable or decreased slightly. The largest decreases occurred in Niobrara (down from 3.8% to 3.0%), Big Horn (down from 4.8% to 4.4%), Platte (down from 3.6% to 3.3%), and Crook (down from 3.4% to 3.1%) counties.
From February 2023 to February 2024, unemployment rates fell in 14 counties, rose in six counties, and remained unchanged in three counties.

100 Years Ago: ‘Moon’ Garland a heavyweight champ at UW

March 29, 1924
They are telling a right good one about one of our local fellows. One day, a week ago when the weather was rather chilly, a tourist asked the First National Bank corner panhandler for the price of a meal. Along in the evening, he changed his position to the First State Bank corner, and a local citizen who wanted to meet one of the workers from the refinery took up a position east of the First National Bank to wait for the refinery worker. It was getting dark and some folks, who had noticed the tourist during the afternoon, concluded it was about time to have him move on, but had not noticed the fellow shifting to the opposite corner. He spoke to an officer about it. The officer went over and recognized one of his acquaintances and then there was a hearty laugh.

Fair book design contest entries due May 2

For the past few years, the front cover of the Big Horn County Fair book has been designed by students.
Fair manager Cash Duncan has already shared the competition outline with the schools in Big Horn County. The competition is also open to homeschoolers within the county.
The entries must include the 2024 fair theme: “Ticket to Fair-adise.” The fair dates are July 29 through August 4. Big Horn County Fair must be included and easily visible.
The artwork must also be original in thought and design. Bright colors are encouraged. It must also fit on 8.5” x 11” portrait paper. Leaving space on the edges of the paper is requested in case of distortion.

Northwest College seeks community input on academic offerings

Northwest College is actively seeking input from our service area residents of Park, Big Horn, and Washakie counties as part of a Community Needs Survey relating to the college and its academic offerings. Residents should watch for a postcard in their mailbox from Northwest College with a QR code and survey link.
The Community Needs Survey is being conducted to gain a comprehensive understanding of regional perspectives, demographics, service levels, and county-level labor market needs. Community members, business owners, educators, current and future NWC students are being asked to participate in the survey. The results will assist the College in prioritizing and developing programming, and inform strategic investment.

March 18 — 12:41 p.m.: Deputies took information about generator testing on C Street in Basin.
1:01 p.m.: Deputies at Big Horn County Sheriff’s Office in Basin handled a 911 test call.
2:30 p.m.: Michael Isaac Henley was arrested in Basin and charged with felony property destruction.
3:16 p.m.: On Highway 20 South in Basin, deputies assisted the general public with an abandoned vehicle.
4:51 p.m.: Deputies responded to a wildland fire on Lane 38 in Burlington.
March 19 — 8:16 a.m.: Cows were out on Highway 433 in Manderson.
8:42 a.m.: Deputies at BHCSO assisted the general public.
3:24 p.m.: On Farmers Street in Burlington, deputies handled an accidental 911 call.
4:18 p.m.: Deputies assisted Probation and Parole at Big Horn County Courthouse on C Street in Basin. Tyler Dex Marchant was arrested and charged with bond violation.
