Wrestlers punch above their weight at large-school meet in Lander

Curtis Strohschein won the heavyweight division, Ty Strohschein captured second at 175 and Loomis Alexander took third at 138 pounds to lead the surging Greybull-Riverside wrestling squad to a ninth-place finish at last weekend’s Lander Invitational.
The tournament attracted 26 varsity boys teams, with the majority being either 3A or 4A.  The only 2A teams that topped G-R’s 80 points were Thermopolis, which took seventh with 113, and Kemmerer, eighth with 111.5.
“We wrestled a heck of a tournament,” said Coach Rob Nuttall.
He may not have seen it coming.  Sickness has been ravaging his team of late — to the point where G-R entered just six in varsity, three in JV and one girl. “We left a bunch of kids home ... hopefully they start feeling better for the final stretch.”
Gabby Dowling, G-R’s only female competitor, got the most out of her time on the mat, pinning three straight opponents to claim the 135-pound title.

Three Rivers prioritizes new telemetry system

Three Rivers Health’s revenues topped expenditures for a second straight month in December, providing another sign that the healthcare organization, which frequently tapped its reserves to cover operational costs last year, is trending toward more solid financial footing.
Michael Garza, manager of the TRH finance department, told the board on Wednesday night that the net gain for December was $74,271.  In November, it was $303,229.  Prior to that, TRH had consistently seen its expenditures top revenues.
TRH reported gross patient revenues of $1.25 million, compared to $1.11 million in November, along with increases in acute days (22, compared to 10 in November), swing bed days (16, up from seven) and ER visits (136, up from 108).  Clinic visits fell slightly, from 632 in November to 548 in December.

GHS Speech takes second at Worland Beach Invite

The Greybull High School speech team tested its mettle against 22 schools at the Worland Beach Invitational last weekend, finishing second in a 1A/2A sweepstakes indicative of future state competition.
“The Worland meet was almost a practice run for state with the 1A/2A programs, as all but two were competing,” said coach Joel Kuper. Only 10 Greybull members competed at the meet, but Kuper said his team “brought their best for the event…amidst some very tough competition.”
“We had to have some breakthroughs and the students found the right time to have a great effort.”
Tyler Searfoss was the team’s top placer. He took fourth in Congressional Debate after a grueling run through three chamber rounds and two final rounds.
“This was a great effort from Tyler. He has been battling some of the same students in Congressional Debate for the past few weeks and finally managed to make the top four,” Kuper said.

Museum supporters seek BHC support for expansion project

A group representing the Big Horn Basin Dinosaur and Geoscience Center, Greybull Town Council and the Greybull Museum appeared before the Big Horn County Commission on Jan. 16.
Nolan O’Neal spoke first, explaining that they were working to get a world class display of local fossil treasures. “There are three headlines here.  The first one just sets the stage. This basin has a unique place in history and science.”
The commissioners were given a handout that showed the four dinosaur casts the museums are pursuing.
He said some of the quarries in the county have produced the world’s most complete, unique, and scientifically important fossils and that many locals may not realize this. Thousands of bones discovered in the Howe Quarry in the 1930s went to the Museum of Natural History. The expedition was mainly funded by Sinclair.

Short on volunteer firefighters and EMTs? These bills could help

Amid funding and staffing pressures at emergency medical service agencies across Wyoming, two bills this legislative session aim to help attract more volunteers.
The Joint Labor, Health and Social Services Committee voted nearly unanimously to sponsor two bills for this session: Senate File 3 – State employee leave for volunteer fire or volunteer EMS and Senate File 8 – Health insurance for volunteer emergency responders.
They come at a time of mixed success for legislation intended to help rural EMS, which is wedged between low reimbursement rates, increasing costs and decreasing volunteerism.
Legislators last session narrowly passed a law allowing counties to put EMS district proposals to voters who can decide whether to fund ailing emergency services. However, interim committee lawmakers this summer voted down efforts to designate EMS as an essential service.

Winter Carnival an ‘amazing success’

On Saturday, families from all over Big Horn County crowded the indoor arena in Basin for the Fair’s Winter Carnival, an event that raised funds for future fairgrounds improvement projects.
Fair manager Cash Duncan said about the event, “The winter festival was an amazing success and I heard lots of good things about the event as a whole. I’m not exactly sure how many people came and, unfortunately, I can’t tell by counting the money because there were a lot of generous donations made by festival goers. A rough guess is anywhere from 200 to 300 people total attended the event.”
Duncan noted that many generous 4-H parents, leaders and members put together booths. Families cooked and served food. The FFA advisors from Lovell, Greybull and Basin were there, as well as Michelle Olsen Photography, which offered free family photos.

This is a question being asked many times since the Lions Club advertised the popularity contest to be staged at the benefit dance being given by the athletic committee of that organization Wednesday, Feb. 6 at the Grand Palace. Whoever the winner of the contest may be, she cannot help but be pleased, as she will have seven different articles to select from.

Dinosaur museum reports significant progress

In its first four weeks of fundraising, the Big Horn Basin Dinosaur and Geoscience Museum has raised enough money to purchase a full body cast of Big Al 2, the world’s most complete allosaur.

This large meat-eating dinosaur, which was a distant ancestor to Tyrannosaurus rex, will form part of a Jurassic dinosaur display that supporters are creating in conjunction with a planned expansion of the Greybull Museum. 

Temperature records fall under weight of cold snap

Before warming slightly on Tuesday afternoon, the Big Horn Basin was stuck in a deep freeze with subzero temperatures that led to nonstop windchill advisories and warnings, the cancellation of school events and travel plans, reports of frozen water lines and difficult times for people working outdoors.
