Survey shows satisfaction with parks, but not streets

The majority of Greybull residents who participated in a recent capital improvement program survey indicated they are satisfied with the quality of the town’s parks, trails, wastewater services and drinking water while giving the town far lower marks for the condition of its sidewalks and streets.
Cody Wyatt, a civil engineer at WWC Engineering in Sheridan, presented the survey results at the Dec. 11 meeting of the Greybull Town Council.  One-hundred twenty people participated in the online survey, which was conducted between Nov. 9 and Dec. 8.
Normally updated every five to 10 years, the CIP is meant to serve as a roadmap for town leaders.  Step one is to identify and prioritize the greatest needs facing the town while step two is the creation of a detailed plan to address them.  

Churches: Celebrate reason for the season

South Big Horn County churches will be celebrating the birth of the Christ Child in the coming days, with most of the services planned for Christmas Eve which is Sunday.
Zion Lutheran Church in Emblem:  Christmas Eve worship at 10:30 a.m., candlelight worship at 6 p.m.
Grace Lutheran Church in Greybull: Christmas Eve worship at 8 a.m., candlelight worship at 4 p.m.  Christmas Day worship at 10:30 a.m.
Shell Cowboy Church: Christmas Eve candlelight service at 5:30 p.m. at the Shell Hall with a chili dinner to follow.  Please bring goodies to share.
Greybull Alliance Church: Christmas Eve candlelight service at 6 p.m.  
Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greybull: Mass at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve and 10:30 a.m. on Christmas Day.
Grace Fellowship Church in Greybull:  Regular Sunday worship service at 10:30 a.m.

District forest ranger shares update with commission

The Big Horn County Commissioners received updates from District Ranger Mark Foster about the Medicine Wheel Ranger District Fiscal Year 2023 Annual Report at their Dec. 6 meeting.
He said the report is an ongoing dialogue. “Our annual report for the district talks about some success for the last year. One of the things we are really emphasizing there is partnerships, engagement with our local community. I hope that that comes through.”
One update from the report addressed the Fire and Fuels program. Longtime manager Marvin Mathiesen is retiring. Sage Decker from the Cody Bureau of Land Management (BLM) office will replace him. Foster said Decker already knows many of the same contacts and is dialed in to local fire organizations.
Foster also spoke about Forest Service Road 12. He will be facilitating discussion to ensure there is a consensus regarding the management of the road.

SD#3 releases climate survey results

A climate survey that was taken earlier this fall by more than 130 students and 60 family members of students revealed some deterioration in their overall perceptions of Big Horn County School District No. 3.
The climate survey was discussed at a board work session earlier this month and then again, briefly, at the Dec. 12 meeting of the school board.  It was comprehensive in nature, covering a wide range of topics. With the guarantee of confidentiality, all stakeholders — not only students and their families, but also educators and education service providers — were invited to participate.
At the high school level, 88 students were surveyed, down from 108 last year. At the middle school, 53 were surveyed compared to 94 last year.

Looking Back 100 Years Ago: Firefighters rush to Alamo Hotel

The fire department was called out about 2 o’clock Saturday morning to a fire in the Alamo Hotel. The alarm brought out not only the department, but a large number of citizens. The fire was on the inside ground floor and basement and was quickly brought under control.
The Midwest athletic field has been converted into a skating rink which is a source of much healthy amusement for both young and old skaters of the vicinity.
The air tank in the tinshop of Arlie Roberts, just back of this office, exploded Wednesday afternoon, scattering itself over the shop without damaging anything else.

Grassroots group organizes in defense of resident hunters

POWELL — Meeting in the basement of Big Horn Federal Savings Bank in Cody, 18 local men sat in a circle “AA style” to discuss the beginnings of a new grassroots organization.
The hope behind “A Better Wyoming,” they said, is to rein in what they see as harmful outfitter and guide regulations.
“The commercialization of our wildlife is real,” said group co-founder Tim Metzler, a former outfitter.  “Anytime there’s money involved in [hunting], things seem to go sideways.”
Metzler said rules governing outfitters and guides have evolved in recent years, largely to accommodate large companies.

Gov. Gordon warns lawmakers to prepare for hard times, despite surplus of state dollars

JACKSON — Gov. Mark Gordon warned lawmakers of the cuts they will need to make in the upcoming budget session, despite a surplus of state revenue.
Before the Joint Appropriations Committee on Tuesday, Gordon presented his vision for how billions of state dollars should be spent over the next two years. Although the Legislature doesn’t have to adhere to every recommendation, it is often a guiding light through the 20-day session that starts in February.
The cuts he proposed stem from the end of a federal funding boom. American Rescue Plan Act dollars and other care packages dealt out during the pandemic can no longer prop up programs and services in the same way for senior citizens, long-term care facilities and mental health services.

Changes at Antelope Butte

It’s time to find the wax and tune-up your gear as opening day at Antelope Butte is fast approaching. The goal is to open on Wednesday, December 20th. “We are continuing to track snowpack to see what is there, stay tuned as we may need to push opening day,” said general manager John DeVivio. “There’s a whole lotta snow up around the summit, and even at mid-mountain, we’re creatively looking at base area options,” he said.
A handful of changes welcome returning recreationalists. Early birds have been heard, lifts will start rolling at 9 am, thirty minutes earlier than last season. There will be no increase in ticket prices this season.
