Hospice workers comfort families in loved ones' final days and beyond

Other than being Big Horn County residents, Eddie Johnson, Samantha Cook and Elsie Martens would appear to have little in common. They live in different communities — Johnson and Cook in Greybull and Martens in Lovell — and they are in different stages of their life journeys.

The one thing that unites them is grief.  All of them said goodbye to a loved one within the past year.  Johnson lost his wife Dixie Johnson on May 18, Cook her mother-in-law DeLane Cook on April 7, and Martens her dear friend Loretta Bischoff on July 8.

Paintbrush named 2A runner-up

Greybull High School’s 2021-22 yearbook staff received a Golden Pony and was named 2A runner-up at the Wyoming High School Student Publications Association State Journalism Convention held recently in Laramie.

Six students (Catcher Russell, Emerald Jordan, Sarah Murph, Selena Munoz, Grainger Russell and Lucia Garcia) made the trip.  While there, students attended workshops on subjects ranging from graphic design and photography to story writing and ad sales. 

Several members of the 2021-22 staff also garnered individual awards.

Emerald Jordan won a Golden Pony and was the all-state champion in photography. She also won a  Bronze Star in design.

Grainger Russell won a Golden Pony and was the all-state champion in newspaper design.  He also earned a Silver Spur in photography.

Catcher Russell won a Silver Spur in yearbook design and a Bronze Star in photography.

Josselyn Jara won a Silver Spur in yearbook design.

Veterans dinner in the works for Nov. 11

In and around the communities of Basin, Lovell, Burlington, Emblem, Shell, Manderson, Hyattville and Greybull are hundreds of individuals who have served in the military. 

All of these veterans, along with their spouse/guest, are invited to a dinner on Friday, Nov. 11 (Veterans Day) at the Greybull Elks Lodge.

Surviving tortoise silver lining in hoarding case

A sulcata tortoise thought lost to the animal hoarding situation on Windy Run was found alive in early October and is doing well in his new home.

Michelangelo or “Mikey” had lived in the Windy Run basement his whole life, as far as Babette Nicholson knew. Babette is the wife of Derick Nicholson, whose mother Mikey belonged to.

“She bought him when he was a baby, and he’s been there ever since,” said Babette. “We’re thinking he’s between 5 and 8 years old. We’re not sure of the exact time she got him or how old he was. I know he was tiny though.”

The family who reported the animal hoarding situation worried the neglected dogs might have gotten to the tortoise. 

Suzy Watson was on scene when Marv Harp Jr. first waded into the basement in search of Mikey. Only certain individuals could go in due to safety and sanitary reasons.

“Marv went in there to find it—he had on waders—but he couldn’t find it,” Watson recalled.

Savoring the suds at the Greybull Brewfest

The city park was the perfect summer setting for Saturday’s Greybull Beerfest. Gathered at the skatepark end of the greenspace, colorful tents dotted the perimeter with two food trucks providing treats for attendees. “The location of having it in the park was new and a huge hit,” said economic development director Deanna Werner, who organized the event.

Shell Fire gets an assist - from NY firefighters

Readers of the Standard may recall the story of Vinny Alexio, the retired New York City firefighter who spent the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks hunting for deer in the Greybull area with his friend Travis Marshall.

Alexio ended up getting a deer and left town a happy man, but his story didn’t end at the airport terminal.  Not by a longshot.  He returned to the area in May, this time to hunt turkeys.  He and Marshall had gone to the home of Terry and Dineen Mueller, seeking permission to hunt their land.  Over snacks and drinks, they got to talking about firefighting and differences between their departments.

One big one, in particular: In New York City, firefighters hold fundraisers for company dances and parties. But in Shell, where the fire department receives no funding from any government sources, survival depends on it.

Faces have changed, but mantra of helping others hasn’t as BPOE 1431 readies for 100th

BPOE 1431 of Greybull is celebrating its 100th birthday. A gala is planned on Saturday, July 16 – an all-day social with guests expected from all around “Elkdom.”

We talked about its earliest history dating back to the late 1800s; it took several decades to take root in our small town.

To look at its earliest origins in Greybull, we turned to Tom Davis and “Glimpses of Greybull’s Past” and to some long-ago Greybull Standards, now yellowed with age.

Davis wrote: “In 1921, there were many men in Greybull who wanted to form an Elks Lodge, but they were dismayed to learn that the national Elks organization required a town to have 5,000 people before a lodge could be formed. These men believed that Greybull had ‘almost 5,000 people,’ so they formed an organization named the ‘Antlers Club,’ and started to count and count and count … 

(Unofficially, the Antlers Club was called the ‘Stray Elks.’)

Werbelow, Burns earn top honors for GHS Class of 2021

Matthew “Matt” Werbelow, son of Julie and Victor Werbelow, and Kaylyn Burns, daughter of Dan and Michelle Burns, have been named valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, of this year’s graduating class at Greybull High School.

First Baptist Church to hold Passover dinner April 13

The First Baptist Church in Greybull will be holding a Passover (Seder) Dinner on Tuesday, April 13 from 5:30-8 p.m.    Henry and Darlene Matarrita will be serving the meal.  If you would like to attend the service/meal an RSVP must be sent to the Baptist Church at 765-2640 by Saturday, April 10.
